Comparrison of Todd's standard and my new Wested

I received my new washed goatskin Wested ROTLA a few weeks ago. I thought I might give a comparison review and some pics for those that are unsure of which to buy.
Todds standard
This jacket is about 1 1/2 years old. The design is very SA. I bought this from Todd for $ 150.00. The leather is very lightweight and thin. It is also very comfortable. It has held up very well to daily wear. Nothing major as far as outdoor adventuring in this jacket. So I cant speak for its durability. It has an awesome drape to it. It is almost flemsy which in my opinion goes with the way the ROTLA jacket was in the film. I say for the money you get a very nice looking SA jacket. I wouldn't want to depend on this jacket to protect my skin if needed. I believe it would tear or wear through very easily. But for everyday wear it was a good buy and it allows me to wear this jacket when the weather really doesn't call for a jacket to be worn. If it is cold the wind goes right through it. So here are a couple of pictures of the jacket.
Wested washed goat ROTLA
I received this jacket about 3 weeks ago. It is an entirely different jacket thaen my Todd's. The washed goat from wested is more substantial then the Todd's. It will also keep me warm throughout the winter. It's SA is close in design, but it doesn't move like the Raiders jacket. I believe it would save my skin in a scrape however as it feels very durable. I got the washed goat because I wanted a worn in look from the get go. The brand new lamb is to shiney for me. So it was a good choice for me. My Wested is a off the shelf size 40 and it fits me perfect. Here are a few pics of it.
I hope this helps some of you that are undecided between the two jackets. I believe both are fine jackets. It just depends on the way you want to use your jacket.

nice review.
People reading this who don't know should keep in mind that the Todd's standard is lamb skin and this Wested is goat skin. Quite a difference in leather.
Anyway nice fitting off-the-rack from Wested

The Todds that I got had an inspector tag in one pocket and another paper tag in the other pocket that listed the jacket as goatskin. So I am assuming that the Todd's I have is actually goatskin. Hopefully Todd will read this and shed some light on the matter. Have you released some standard jackets in goatskin?

Interesting beaverlid about those tags. All the 'standard' jackets I've read about and seen are lamb skin.
Your description of it even sounds like lamb. Maybe Todd will clarify.

I actually may still have the tag that says goatskin on it. I will look for it and take a pic. I agree it may have been a fluke that it was put in the wrong jacket. I am not sure if his customs come in different leathers.

I know that he offers his customs in lamb or cow. I've never heard of Todd offering a goat option (but could be very much wrong, of course).

Beaverlid, you'll find that the washed goat will gain a lot of character very quickly, especially if you get it wet at all, ie a little rain.
Great fit form an OTR.

Thanks for the compliment. I was measured for a suit not to long ago and rougly it equated to the measurements of the size 40 and the jacket fits like a glove. I am about to give it the Pecards treatment this weekend to protect the leather.

Think you may be happier with final result if you wet well , wrinkle ,,scrunch, twist allow to tumble in cool dryer and wear for few hours ,then allow to completely dry for 1-2 days before Pecarding.....has just been my experience

I want a natural look from this point on. My Todd's standard was a little to shiney for my taste. I want my wested to be the last jacket I buy for a long time. I want this to be an old friend like my fedora is when I am an old cogger. So I plan to let time distress this coat. I do want to be able to wear it without worry when it rains hence the Pecards. Thanks for the tip though.

I have heard of the sleeves shrinking due to this process. Have you had this occur?

nope, just use warm shower and cool dryer.....just lets the leather mold to you more quickly ,,,,,and you can conform the collar to how you prefer it......

More so with my lamb Wested than my cow Todd- but yes, it will shrink a bit. Best not done on a jacket that fits well already

NICE jacket's beaverlid!
I'm on the same exact page as you on this one, I want my jacket to age naturally and I'm confident that the washed goat will last a long time. I've got a cow hide A-2 that I bought in 1986 that has distressed naturally for over 20 years and it looks GREAT. I was thinking I'd post some pics of it on the care and distressing forum for people to use as a reference when distressing their new stuff. I've had my washed goat Wested for about a month and it's already showing some great character lines in the sleeves and body, and the collar is starting to curl slightly, making it more "Indy" and less "Fonzie". I bought some Pecards, the leather dressing, not the gel, and was planning on giving it a coating in a week or two. But now I'm wondering if I should have bought the gel instead of the leather dressing. Any advice from the crowd would be helpful on this.

I agree with you. This jacket fits me the way I like so I think I will just Pecard it. I appreciate all the tips guys.

I like to listen to experience and Michaelson said the gel that is listed as cream is the way to go.
I saw your post with pics when you got your ROTLA WESTED. It appears we both chose wisely

Generally the creme is recommended for the tighter pores of goat. It seems to be taken up more readily.
However, from my own experience of the washed goat and the regular Pecards dressing. It will work in fine and will not cause it to become shiny. It will darken a bit, but after a while that slightly 'damp' look will fade.

Thanks KT, my washed goat has a little bit of a grayish patina to it, and I am thinking the Pecard's will take that "dry" look out of it.

One prop that I would give to Todd is that he basically looked at the Raiders film jacket and made a 'film' jacket, as it was a costume piece. Over the years, Wested has adapted his jacket to more of a 'street-wise' version of the original. Nice OTR washed goat, and looks like it is just a fit.

I am not sure what the sleeve length is. All I know is that I ordered an OTR size 40. That may well be the measurement of the sleeve length.
I applied the Pecards last night to my Wested. I will post pics later this weekend. I am very pleased with the outcome. It dried overnight hanging on a hanger suspended from a plant hook on the ceiling. It darkened up a little but it definately got rid of that dry grey look in certain spots. I feel like I have a much better all weather leather jacket now. It didn't take that long. I sat down with my kids and watched the world premiere spongebob movie on nick tv and did it and I would guess it took about 30 minutes. I did ever inch of leather on the jacket on the outside and inside. I was very careful to hit every bit of leather.
As I mentioned earlier it darkened the leather slightly but nothing to fret over, and it did not make the leather shiney at all once it dried and absorbed into the leather. I used the gel that is labeled cream and out of my 8 oz jar very little was used. I have many more treatments I can apply with whats left.

The washed goat from wested is more substantial then the Todd's. It will also keep me warm throughout the winter. It's SA is close in design, but it doesn't move like the Raiders jacket. I believe it would save my skin in a scrape however as it feels very durable.
I don't know what your winter is, but I've owned washed goat for a year and a half now and can't say it's a warm jacket. Not warm at all. Also, it's the thinnest goat I've come across but feels sturdy enough.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the washed goat but it is hardly substanstial and great to wear when you think you might need a jacket and can wad it up and thow it in the truck. When I wore mine up in the Andes in December it was fine...with a lot of high-tech layering.

This is the Jacket a couple of days after the Pecards was applied. It is completely dry with no residue. I tried to take some pictures with a white backdrop to really show the color of the leather. Hopefully it gives you a good idea of the leather after the treatment.
