How do I rebraid the end of a whip?

Ok so after cracking the whip a bit last night I noticed it really loose and limp right before the knot where the fall is connected. So I took the fall off.. now I have 6 loose strands and am totally lost. After I get it braided back up, how do I tie it on the fall?

Here's a diagram showing the traditional Australian style fall hitch. Do exactly what it shows and you should be alright.

To clarify, what's happening in the diagram above is: you're taking the loose strands and just tying half-hitches around all the loose ends. It doesn't matter what order you do them in, but only do each strand once until you do them all. If the strands are still really long then maybe go again. Make sure the last strand is tucked under the eye of the fall when you pull the fall in tight.
In the future, you may not want to untie the whole fall hitch to take off the fall. If your whip is braided like a Morgan, you can cut the eye of the fall and just pull it out. There's a great tutorial online at David Morgan's site that can show you how to do it. It's much less of a hassle than unbraiding part of the whip.

Is this what happened to your whip? This is my late 1990s DM and the braids right before the fall are becoming very loose. I was going to ask the same question, but you beat me to it. So does anyone know what WE should do about our whips?

If you want a Morgan style hitch, go under and then fold over. Looks much better, and i feel it is a tighter method.

One of the great benefits of tying the hitch "Aussie" style is all you have to do is give the strands a little tug with your pliers to tighten them up. Check out Bernies site for the movies on how to tie the hitch in this method:

Yeah it became really loose and limp right past the rubber core (it's a todd's whip). So I took the fall off but I also unbraided it a bit. So the braiding it at the end is the hard part. That diagram will really help with attaching the fall though, thanks

Hey, thanks blueoakleyz for addressing this issue. This is one of the things I dread about whip repair. So far, it is not neccessary on any of my whips, but when the day comes it will be great to have so much additional info on something I find a bit intimidating. Of course the best solution, at least for me , would be to have a reputable whip maker do the job. However since I am located in Europe, my options are more limited. Plus the fact that you are sending a valuble item through the mail again, would make me uneasy. There are also videos on this subject (apart from BernieĀ“s excellent stuff on youtube) that I may end up getting, even if it is just to increase my negligible braiding skills.
Cheers!

Great stuff tomek, although what has me concerned is the rebraiding, issue. Having to do all the half hitches is probably easier than it looks. I hope more forum members can post more on this...

It's not nearly as bad as it looks. I found David Morgan's online tutorial very helpful and fairly easy to follow.
http://www.davidmorgan.com/fallreplacement.html
I had an old whip that I finally had to replace the fall on last year - the original fall was actually attached to the core under the end knots!
Needless to say, I removed that right away, and placed a new fall over the braids and used the Morgan tutorial to finish the half hitches. It took me a while, but it turned out good and tight and looked WAY better than the original attachment, and it's a snap to change out the falls in the future.

To actually braid the 4 plait area at the end of the whip before the fall hitch, try watching this video here:

It's actually easier than you might think. May the Force be with you!

anything for 6 strings?

For six strings it will be
under2 over1 for both sides
or
under2 over1 for one side and under1 over2 for second side.
You can also make a checkerboard at the tip - over1 under1 over1 for both sides.
Then you attach the fall. I posted a link to John Leonetti galleries, it's showed there how Lauren attaches the fall. It's easy!

Hi all
Here is a diagram that may be useful for those wanting to re-tie the fall hitch.

So that's why my fall hitch didn't sit correctly?
I thought you went around alternating left and right.
So you have to tie them all to the same side.
Thanks a lot for the information Chris!!
