Which Nowak Leather Weighs The Heaviest?

Post by Indyzane »

So I am just curious :-k if anyone knows which of Tony’s leathers is the heaviest out of the shrunken lamb, vintage goat and the dark CS cowhide? Maybe Hans Jones could help me?
[-o<
Also I know I could call Tony and just ask but I don't want to bug him with a petty question like this. Thanks!

I think from all the thread about the different hides, I would say the heaviest is the CS cowhide.

I know my shrunken lamb weigths 1,1 kg and my goat (not the vintage but one of the first goat Tony use for the Raiders jacket, hans has one like mine) is under 900 g

If you are asking because you are getting ready to order, it is the kind of question you should be asking Tony.
you can guess by weight of a jacket but jackets won't weight e same, assuming your question id only about physical weight of the leather.

Rc,
yes you guess it. Talked with Tony on thursday and forgot to ask about leather weight. So I am having such a hard time figuring out what I want. I live in Utah and it gets cold here in the winter months so I need a thick heavy jacket. I can't decide between Raiders shrunken lamb or LC distressed cow. I want both and it is just killing me to decide! ](*,) I know only I can choose and choose wisely but man I can't! Okay I am steering towards LC first. I am going to L.A. In 2/2010 and was going to go see Tony in person so maybe I'll get the shrunken lamb then. Thanks again for your help RC!

All the leather offered is great so the decision is not easy.
The SL is not necessarily a light weight. If you are considering Cow you might consider Happy Cow. If you are interested at all in goat skin the 'Nowak Goat' might fit with what you are looking for.

Depends too on the cut, but all things being equal, it is cow, goat, lamb. I would think that the density of the leather fits in there somewhere as well.

Personally, if you're trying to decide between a Raiders SL or an LC distressed cow, I say LC ALL THE WAY :) His LC jackets are such an amazing sight to behold! And I think a cow jacket will serve you well in the winter.

Of the three I've had I would rank them this way (in order of lightest to heaviest):

shrunken lamb-->747-->CS cowhide

I'd also add the caveat that 747 is not that much heavier than the SL.

goat is actually a fairly light physical weight, but strong, skin.

Thanks all for your help! I guess I'll go for LC now and get SL next year. Crismans and Rc I like both of your jackets and I have read just about everything you two have posted here on your jackets. Also it means alot to me to get your help. Thanks again to all! :TOH:

Still confused. 747 is cowhide right? CS is a denser weight? Are we talking about european or american skins?

Interesting. I guess a lot depends by what is meant by heavy. An Aero leather jacket (considered the best made and most robust of 1930's - 1950's style utility jackets) tend to weigh a lot. We're looking at around 5 to 8 pounds for a short jacket size 42 reg. Tony uses fashion leather by comparison. Which is what I prefer as I can't wear any jackets over 4 pounds. Can anyone tell me what a 747 cow actually weighs?

I suppose 'fashion leather' also needs to be defined. I see fashion leather as being stuff much lighter, weaker and thinner than what Tony uses, and often with a 'fake' surface.
A lot of what Aero (and some others) used in the 30's through 50's on utility jackets was a heavy utility Horse hide, Bull hide or steer hide. Most people wouldn't want that on their Indy jacket, maybe not even 'Dr Jones'.

Right on RC. But as the leather jacket maker in my town says, "any jacket the weighs less than 2.5 kilos is fashion leather." My own view is that I don't wear heavy jackets - they're uncomfortable. I may be getting TN to make me a Surrogates jacket. Sorry - off topic.

The Mutt jacket leather is the heaviest leather of all my 7 Nowak jackets.
It's about two times heavier as a single TN1 Indy jacket.
