Yup, I cracked this whip and I liked it. The color is quite nice and I don't think the pictures do it justice.

Now, those looking for a super SA bullwhip, you'd probably get a Bernardo, a Strain, or a Morgan. But for a cowhide bullwhip intended for the Indy fan who can't afford a kangaroo whip, Gus's whips are a great option.

PS: This is my unpaid, un-asked for opinion on Gus's current whips.

Howdy Gus :TOH:
Nice looking whip. I'm really enjoying the 8 footer I got from you a few weeks back. Will you be offering this new whip soon? If so how much?

I may be looking to upgrade to a 12 plait (not sure if I'm ready for a 10 footer yet) and yours are pretty much within my $$$$ range.

anyway, greta whip again! Glad you have the approval / backing of Adam...I've seen his videos on youtube...that guy's a master with the whip :whip: :whip: :notworthy:

The 8 footer I got from you about two years ago is still the only whip I ever bought. that thing has been beat to heck and it still works great. not a broken strand or anything. it colored VERY nicely, btw. but believe me when I say my neighbors hate you. I have a problem with getting drunk at indecent hours and going outside to crack it.

Knowing this whip is made of cowhide I am very impressed.I can't say how much work it takes(for me)......work, and talent indeed.
I've tried cowhide just once. I've found it so hard to work with, especially braiding cowhide comparing to kangaroo......

To be honest I often wonder why cowhide whips are often cheaper? (than roo hide whips)
It's really a big work to get strong and thin strands form cowhide. You always need to find a thick hide, and to split the strands once you've stretched them: so more work, more hours.......am I wrong ?

Anyway congratulations Gus, great work!

I had the pleasure of seeing one of Gus's two tone cowhide whips in person very recently. It really was a remarkable looking whip and beautifully plaited. At first glance it looked like roo.

Hey Jim thanks for the post. It was great to meet you in person.

jeanfifi: Thanks for the comments. Yeah cowhide has always been alittle hard to work with since the breaking point of the strands are so low. Also to get a strand thin and narrow to be strong if hard. But I have been working with cowhide for most of my whip making years. And trust me it has been hard. Yeah I think that they should be a bit higher in price. For now I am getting them at a decent price. It also helps to know the main man at the leather store to hook you up with the best leathers they have.

The Intercept: hey that is awesome that you got to work with one of my whips. Youtube is fun and a great way to get people to see your talents on whip cracking.

ztmario: hey thanks for the comments. Yeah I have done that in the past. I lived in a not so nice neighbor hood at one time and I remember it was a group of us just having a good time. I started cracking my whip and I mean with in about 5 min there was 7 cop cars all getting out coming to us telling us to "put your hands up". Man it was crazy but after they saw what it was they cooled off a bit. They said no prob on hanging out but please not to crack whip so late. :rolling: I live in a different neighborhood now and all my neighbors know that I crack whips. But never late at night. Lol

Indiana County Jr.: I like the word "Magic" for my whips. Lol

Solojedi: I am really looking at getting a lot of this type of leather but we are still in the process of negotiations with the leather store. Yeah Adam is really talented at whips and whip making. We hung out for a while after the competition. Talked whip and got a few good points on making my whips even better.
Thanks Adam.

This whip has a 2oz overlay. Not very thick at all. But very strong.

I have to agree with Gus, the quality of cowhide that you get makes a huge difference in plaiting. When I first started making whips in leather years ago I started in cowhide and was working with not so great quality cowhide for plaiting. While cowhide in general does take a little bit more effort to get used to in whipmaking the price compared to kangaroo is cheaper. As Gus said working with your leather supplier extensively is a big help, especially if that supplier also knows the quality of kangaroo hide and can hand pick leather for you that is as close to it as possible. Great quality whips can be produced form cowhide at a reasonably cheaper price then kangaroo. (Pictured below is one of my most resent Cowhides that I photographed). Cowhide whips are a great alternative for people who what a leather whip but don't want to spend the money for what a kangaroo hide whip costs.

Keep Crackin,
James

PS (Hey Gus get a hold of me, I feel we can learn more tips and tricks from each other in working with cowhide, look forward to hearing from you)

My head is spinning with all the possibilities for all the gear - the whip being one of the most important purchases, but since I am not a wealthy collector/costumer I have to go after a product that is priced to my budget, yet still meets my quality and 'look' needs.
I am happy to say that Gus's whips should do the trick for me. Once I have the funds available, I will be going to him for my whip - and I will be sure to post lots of pictures for you guys to check out! ;)
