If you can't see the card identifying the Del Carpio, then as a short hand, the Del Carpio has the slightly lighter Turkshead. I didn't keep them on the same side from photo to photo.

The major similarities should be obvious, so I'll only mentioned the main differences.

The Strain has thinner cut strands, the Del Carpio has slightly wider strands. The Del Carpio wrist loop also has wider strands than the Strain.

Other than that, from a visual perspective, they are virtually identical, and both offer excellent SA details. Both men are top whip makers and I tip my hat to both of them for delivering such wonderful products.

At this point, I won't be offering my thoughts on "which I like better" etc. I've owned an 8' Strain for the past year, so I know Joe's work somewhat, but I literally received the 10' Strain a week ago, and the Del Carpio today, so I'm not ready to come to any conclusions as far as these two particular whips go. I don't think the difference in length will account for any great difference in my opinion of them, but I will say, in a general way, how much one foot can make a difference in cracking routines.

I have to say, much as I like Bernardo's work, of those two whips I like the Strain the best. It looks sleek, elegant, Morganesque and very Raiders.

I have one of each as well, they are both great, but the Strain wins hands down in my opinion. My hitch point is still tight on my Strain and it is over a year old now. Still both great whips!

I love cracking them both! And I ordered them different lengths so that I had good reason to use them both!

A 9' Del Carpio is very cool thing. Joe doesn't advertise a 9' Raiders, but I'm sure if you asked him nicely, he'd do it for you.

DH I just recieved a 8' Del Carpio a couple weeks ago. The Strain looks real close. I debated the choice btween those two.
Our Bernardo's were probably on his bench at the same time!

I'm sure they were, Raider57, No doubt.

Mine seems lighter than yours. Did you ask him to make yours saddle tan? He made mine natural tan.

Ok, I found the tag. Mine is natural tan, must be the backgroud/lighting.

Very good choices! I have to say, this really shows that both Bernardo and Strain are really on top of their game! I'd be extremely pleased with both if it were me. Take care of 'em, and they'll take care of you.

Yeah, I think its just the lighting, as you say.

Boy, I love these two whips. I'm so happy that I ordered both of them.

My next couple of purchases are definitely coming from these two fine whipmakers. And let me just add to that what fine gentlemen they are.

Here's what I what next: A matched pair of 5 foot "Indy-esque" whips with 10" handles for two-handed work from Joe, and a 6' "Last Crusade" whip from Bernardo, probably in Saddle Tan, so I have something to work in tighter spaces for my Indy get-up.

I put that polypro cracker on there myself, not Joe. Joe sent it to me with a black nylon cracker, (SA) but I removed it a day or two before I took that photo. I hate those things. They tangle too much.

I make my own polypro crackers now, thanks to Anthony De Longis who showed me how to make them, and who gave me a life-time supply of blue polypro thread. I guess it comes tied around bales of alfalfa and hay, so he has tons of it laying around. He was just like, "here, take it." He gave me a plastic bag full of it, and it should last me quite some time.

Aha! So I was wrong... I once read about somebody saying that Joe prefers to put polypro crackers on his whips, so I thought that was the reason the whip had a polypro cracker.

I don't really like polypro crackers myself. I prefer to make the nylon ones shorter, to avoid tangles. That is, a short fluff and a short twisted section. I'll change the cracker in my Ben Scott bullwhip as soon as it wears down.

Joe put polypro crackers on the KOTCS whip he made for me last year, and sent along some extras. But the Raiders whip has black nylon crackers to be SA.

Anthony De Longis likes to make his crackers pretty long, and what Terry Jacka does is to make the crackers super long, and actually taper. It's a pretty cool idea, so I've been trying it out: Just make like three or four poppers, each one thinner than the previous and string them all together. It works pretty well. Bottom line is, experimentation is good.

Those Del Carpio's are gorgeous!! Not that the strains are not...but there's just something about those DC's. Awesome whips.

DelCarpio whips are more similiar to original whips because of no binding. But both are amazing, each detail is perfect.
Darren you are lucky because you will compare those whip with AB whip by Paul Nolan. 3 SA whip under one roof

I'm pretty jazzed about it. It seems to me that Joe, Paul, and Bernardo make the best working replicas. So, two down, one to go! Can't wait to see what Paul's gonna do!
