My 2nd homemade hat

I made a new hat.
It’s the second one I’ve made.
The first one was brown.
I made this one black.
I need something different
To be “The Spirit”.
It’s for Halloween.
I made it for my costume.
I hope it works well.
Here’s a pic of me.
It’s not my Spirit Costume.
I’m just wearing black.

Good work! I remember the first hat you made turned out quite well, too.
How did you like doing the bound edge? I like the bow knot detail you added.

The bound edge was hard.
I spent two days on the hat;
One, just on the edge.
The bow is simple-
In my mind, the most basic.
That was my intent.

Excellent! I am also doing a Spirit costume this Halloween, except I just opted to go with a Fed IV in black. I'm curious, though; why did you choose a bound brim? I thought The Spirit's hat was raw edged?

I like the Fed IV.
I considered getting that,
But I like this hat.
Bound edges are cool.
It's not just a costume hat-
I'll wear it often.

I have to admit
that I am quite entertained
by all your haiku.

Thanks for noticing, Bink. I wasn't sure how much longer I could keep that up!
To better respond without the syllabic restrictions, I was on the verge of getting a black Akubra, but I really wanted to make another hat, and this was a perfect opportunity. While I could have tried to make my hat as accurate as possible to the hat from the movie, I'd rather just make a black hat that I'll enjoy wearing. While I made a few mistakes on this one, I like the overall appearance more that the Spirit's hat. In other words - I did no research. I just made the black hat that I like.
I probably spent about 8 hours working on the bound edge. I thought about doing it with the sewing machine, but that would have been very unforgiving if I were to make a mistake. As I sat in front of the TV for hours sewing the binding, I couldn't help but think how much it was looking like an Amish hat.
As for the bow, I debated whether or not to do a double bow, and settled on the single bow. I wanted to make what I consider the most classic fedora. Maybe I'll do something more fancy with my next hat.

It's a fantastic hat, whether solely for costume purposes or as a dual purpose hat to look sharp. Great effort, Mr. Brody.

Tundrarider, it's not as bad as one might think. It takes an awful lot of patience, and the ability to adapt when your technique doesn't work, but in the end, it's a fun project. I imagine the boots and jacket would be the most difficult to make, followed by the hat and pants. What do I know, though? I've only made the hat.

I think it came out great! I love that crease and the bound brim looks great. Very advanced for a second hat.

I didn't think so many people would warm up to the idea of the bound edge on this forum. After all, Indy never had a bound edge on any of his hats. Only supporting characters did. Toht's hat actually was an inspiration for this one, but I still wouldn't consider mine a copy, or even an effort of a copy of his.

I really like a bound edge. Some hats look better with a raw edge while some look sharp with a bound or welted edge. Again, it depends on the hat. I like variety.
