Does anyone know a good procedure how to remove the mottling after pouncing the hat with a fine grit? I tried it with a wet towel, looks a bit better, but far from perfect...

I'll bump this if you let me add a piggy-back question: Is the mottling seen as especially undesirable?

One of my favorite hats is quite uniform when I brush it out, but mottles with handling. I really like the effect.

I bought this old beaver felt hat on ebay, it's really nice, but the felt looked a bit worn out, so i took off the ribbon and pounced it with a 1000 grit sandpaper and now it has this mottle. I would like it to look as my Adventurebilt Indy 4 (referring the surface of the felt).

Some felt can't take the higher grit. Most likely you over pounced the hat, when it needed a cleaning instead. Getting the mottling out is hard to say without seeing it.
