It has been discussed in the past that some liners were dyed/stained to hide the logo printed on the liner (as Bink says above). If you can get a really good still at the right angle, you might even be able to make out the impression of it. I noticed it in the theatre. This also ties in with the fact that AB has a new, non-legal-trouble-type logo.
What I have never been clear on is wether or not the plain liners were dyed to match, or left white. Bink?
To set the record straight....
All of the production hats, we sent with plain white liners. All of Ford's had the now defunct European, side seamed liner, and the stunt hats had just my modern plain white liner. Bernie wanted plain liners because the clock was ticking, and in order to use a crested liner, that would have to be turned over to the copywrite search team, in order to insure we were not using someone else's logo, (Lucas could get sued) and this process might take months to research. So, to speed up things, he requested plain liners.
Now, a girl at Western Costume, dyed some of the white liners a goldish color, using hair dye. Probably blond hair dye. She also even added fake sweat stains to some of the liners, where it was needed for inside shots of the hat, that may have never made it to the film.
Some of the liners we see in the film were dyed, but others were white. SO we see both.
Only the sample hats had my or Marc's logo in them, and non of the production hats. Now, there was a hat that was sold, from the film, that had the staff of ra on the top of the liner, and this had to have been a sample hat, and not a hat we specifically made for the film. But Bernie had called me from the set one day and told me the original spec'ed hat the 5 1/4 open crown, with 2 7/8 by 2 5/8 brim, had accidently got aged by Western Costume and was sent to Hawaii, by accident, and he used it in the film.(accidently) This had to be the hat with the staff of ra headpiece in it, and it had to have been the sample we sent in the shorter crown and wider brim. Originally Bernie and Ford had chosen the shorter crown, wider brimmed hat, and we had a shipment of those that were about to go out, when I was called and was told NOT to send them. Bernie had just found out, Steven decided to do a costume test, filmed, as he was gonna pick which AB hat to be used. He chose the 5 1/2 open crown model, with the 2 3/4 by 2 1/2 brim. And that is what we made for the film. So, there is one hat in the film that is the original as chosen by Bernie and Harrison, and was fitted to him. And this very hat was sent back to me, to use as a 3 D model to make the rest. It had the plain white liner in it. I kept it, and sold it to Doc Rivera who used to hang out here. He later sold it to someone else. It was the original hat fitted to Harrison.
I was an idiot for selling it to Doc so cheaply! But at the time, I saw no special importance about it, except it had been on Harrisons head, and even had a sweat stain from him on the liner. In hindsight, I should have kept it, and sold it for what he got for it later on!!
It ended up being a special hat in that it was the original chosen hat, by Harrison, and ironically accidently made it into the film(the same spec'ed hat) anyways.
If they do make Indy 5, and Harrisons fitted hat is sent back to again, I won't be so dumb this go around!
Since I now know what the hats sent back to me can fetch, just by the fact they were on Harrisons head. And were a part of the Indy film history. But we were talking about liners......
One last fact. The wedding hat as seen at the end of the film, was a stunt hat, that is, we made it for a stuntman who shared head sizes with Harrison. The tip off to me was the liner. It was the modern plain white liner that I can still get, whereas the side seamed liners used for Harrison's hats are no longer made. So, Bernie apparently used a stunt hat that was extra, for that one scene. The other hats we see the inside of, are the side seamed variety. Fedora
