Cost of hats

I bought my first Stetson Indy fedora back in the 1990's, can't remember what it cost. In this last year or so I have bought an Akubra similar type hat from David Morgan for about $170 CDN, a Todd's Costume's HJ, a Magnoli HJ, a Peter Brothers charcoal grey fedora, and I have on order a Peter Brothers Indy brown fedora, for an approximate cost of $1800US. And I like them all.

I can't break the $1000 mark on hats yet, but I can hit about $1300 on whips! Does that count?
Let's see pics of your collection!

Before COW:
Dorfman Pacific, bought on a whim at Disneyland.
After COW:
Christy's Adventurer
Fed IV
AB (on Order)
And, I'm about to order a Penman, although it won't be an Indy hat. It's going to be similar to the Public Enemies Dillinger hat...I really was just looking for an excuse to add a Penman hat to my collection!

I went down that same road. The list would be long. I climbed that same ladder that many have done. I just wish I took the elevator in stead.

Wow, really. $1300? That better be some serious whippage, dude! But for you, it makes sense that the whips rule your wallet.
I think the most I have ever spent on a hat was a little over $300. I have mainly vintage and custom (ABs, Art Fawcetts, a Penman with a second on the way, JPD). All told, I must have blown some $5-8K on hats over the years. Not really sure.
As for pics, I don't have a full collection shot, but I do have my Art Fawcett collection as of April of this year.

Concur...especially that grey one in the top left. I'd go a different color ribbon, but DANG, I really like the shape of that hat: simple elegance.
I'm at about $2000 in felts...

I went the budget route.
Fed III $60
AB Rabbit $120
Christys' Adventurer $100
Didn't need to find another hat after the AB Rabbit, the Adventurer was a impulse buy.
I'm done. The pure beaver hats are beautiful, but I will never wear it more than once or twice a year so will be a total waste.

That's funny that you mentioned Stetson. I happen to be holding in my hands the second issue of LIFE magazine from November 30, 1936, which shows up in Raiders. On the back cover is an ad for Stetson hats. The prices in the ad range from $7.50 to $40. TIME machine, anyone???!!!!

I've thought about the time machine thing. But, if we were to go back in time with our modern currency and try to buy a $40 hat with a bill that was printed in 2009, they would think it was counterfit. You would have to get ahold of currency from the time you are travelling to. That can be just as expensive as buying the vintage hat now, so it kind of evens out.

Just take gold back with you. You can melt off any dates, and it is guaranteed to have been made long before the 1930s!!!!

Nope. It's fools a lot of people, but it isn't even close. My hat is shown on the "Client Designs" page, though. Fourth one down. I asked for the Mojave felt color, a 2 5/8" brim, and a diamond crown, tall and straight. The rest was Art's instincts. That is my favorite hat, hands down. Art knows that I don't mind if anyone asks to copy my hats, so you can drop my name if you want. He knows me as Not-Bogart13 on Fedora Lounge.
As long as I'm chest thumping... The light brown one (pecan) in my collection is also on Art's Client Design page - last one on the bottom.

I've not broke the $1000 mark on fedoras yet (although I'm getting close). Of course, I blew that line a long time ago on jackets.

Wish I hadn't read this thread, I just did the math and figured I've spent about $990 on hats, only three of them Indy fedoras.
That includes my CS AB I recently ordered though, so without that only $590!

I passed the $1000 mark a few hats ago. I'm probably close to $2000 now. I did the math on another thread.

Hmmm... lets see here:
Dorfman- $99
Akubra Fed IV Deluxe- $140
Adventurebilt Deluxe- $650
Penman Grey Seaplane- $265
Penman "special"- $320
Penman Last Crusade- $320
Adventurebilt- $410
So I have spent just over $2,200 on hats. I think I am about done though. Really... I am.

I'm not motivated enough to do the math but here is what I have aquired over the years Indy-wise:
Stetson Indy - White Liner
Stetson Indy - Gold Liner
DP - Blooze Re-bash
Peters Bros.
Peters Bros. - Beautifully re-blocked by John Penman
AB Deluxe
AB - Raiders Style, from the infamous Ford Felt run
AB - Indy IV Style
Miller - Formerly owned and re-blocked on a Tupperware bowl by a member here
I also have a grey/gray Indy IV AB on order.
Here's a picture of some of them
Back Row: AB Deluxe, AB Raiders, Miller Griff Tupperware Re-block
Front Row: Stetson, DP Blooze Bash, Peters Bros.

In 1936 $7.50 was the equivalent to about $115 today, and $40, $615.

I spent right at 7500 bucks on new hats before I started making my own. Of those, I have only one left, the Federation that kept my head from gettng cut from the sliding door during a tornado a few years ago.
Not sure what I have invested in vintage hats, in storage. I culled them down years ago to just the high end hats, like Knox, Cavanagh, Stetson 7x and 10x, and Borsalinos. Those I just pull out and look at every now and then. Although I did keep one out, a Stetson Whippet that I wear today. Always did like the Whippets, although the felt is not on par with the others mentioned above. Fedora

I'm no way near you my friend but it's easy to get to the large number of dollars when you buy in 3's like the two of use. I can't list all the hats I own or the ones I bought try to chase the Raisers look. I will post what I own now
ABD by Marc and Steve CS beaver brown
AB by Steve Raiders beaver brown
AB by Steve Raiders beaver brown
AB by Steve Raiders beaver grey
AB Henry Raiders rabbit/beaver blend brown
Penman Raiders beaver brown

After just adding these up at retail price. I think I might have to change my first statement in this thread. I might be a lot closer to you than I thought.
