Vintage Morgan Vs. Del Carpio...

Having ordered my whip from Bernardo a couple years ago now based on all the reference I'd seen on this board, etc. I was overjoyed with both the customer service and the item itself. My order was laughably simple; One 10' SA as possible Raiders whip, please.
Recently I had the opportunity to compare my whip to a vintage David Morgan owned by Chris King. Chris is maybe ten times the authority I am on these things so we thought it would be interesting to see what the differences were. Have a look below - maybe you'll be as impressed as we were....
That's the Del Carpio on the left, and the Morgan on the right....
Turk Heads;
The only differece apparent was the slight darkening with age on the Morgan. I forget just how old it is - maybe Chris could chime in...
So I'd like to thank Bernardo for doing an even better job than I knew at the time and can't recommend him enough if you want closest to the real thing....

Very nice looking whip, Bernardo does excellent work. You are very fortunate to have a first class piece of craftsmanship.

Congrats on a beautiful whip my friend. Del Carpio does great work and is the nicest guy. I myself see some differences in the two whips but Since you can't get a vintage DM, you aren't going wrong with the Del Carpio

That Morgan was owned by member IndyChris, then passed down to me and then to Chris King. Nice to see it. I wondered a while back where it had ended up. I got a little thrill seeing the bruise on the handle knot. I remember when my son did that when he was just shy of two years old. Knocked it off the table. Just seeing that bruise gave me total recall.

Definitely a fantastic job! I can't recommend Bernardo's whips enough! Ever since I got my Stenhouse in whiskey, I had wanted a real Indy whip: natural tan! After a few years I got a Bernardo and I love it! It's a rifle AND a piece of art!

Very nice photos, Thanks for posting them. Bernardo’s Indy bullwhips are very much like David’s whips, probably the closest in comparison I’ve seen.
It's been a few years but if I remember right, That David Morgan whip that Chris currently owns was a special order too. It's a little different then the standard 455 series bullwhips David Morgan was making at the time and had the ring knot placed higher up on the handle grip to more closely match the Raiders and Temple of Doom period whips. The foundation of the handle was also built up more just below the transition knot, which was done to give it a stronger tapered look.

Yeah, it looks a bit chunkier over there.
BTW... Is this Chris King the whipmaker who sells nylon whips to WSP?

I was thinking that the DM looks more TOD style than ROTLA because of the tapering of the handle. Thus, I actually like Bernardo's even more! But they are both extremely beautiful! And I'm very pleased to see this, as I should be getting my Del Carpio in the mail in a matter of weeks if not days, so I'll be posting my pics soon!

Me too... It's like Bernardo's is what a Morgan would look like if you cleaned it up. The Morgan looks a little bulky and bulgy for me. It's a fine looking whip, but I prefer Bernardo's.

Agreed.
Though, I wouldn't kick either whip out of bed.... I mean... no I don't sleep with my whip! Well not every night anyway.

Agreed! I like my Morgan, but when it comes time to practice for long periods, I go for my Del Carpio.

You are basing this on 2 photos. I would need to have both in my hands before I would up my minds on who's is better. The feel, balance, and how it cracks.

Here's a Joe Strain (right) next to a Bernardo (Left). Both brand new. The Strain is 10' and Del Carpio 9' btw.

To help add for comparison, here is a David Morgan from 2006. Scary how close they are indeed!
