I've never heard that. Interesting.

I am sure there are other folks that would fit with this. This isn't the first that I have ran across, adventurers, grave robbers, soldiers of fortune, etc.

Any of you guys still have that photo of the paleontologist, on a dig, complete with felt hat? I know I have it, somewhere saved on a cd. It was an old picture, dating way back.

While most of my profs in college, Anthropology profs, were the typical type you see on college campuses, we had this ONE that I still recall. This was a few years before Indy ever made it to the big screen, so he wasn't trying to copy Indy, but this guy, reminded me alot of the fictional Indy. He had just gotten back from a dig somewhere in S.America, and was the most interesting prof that I had. Loved his stories of his experiences. And he wore a Aussie slouch type hat to class. If you saw him, you could pick him out because of the hat. Came with a leopard skin hat band, instead of the more common zebra bands. And going by the looks of that hat, he had worn it for many years.

He loved to tell this same story over and over again. About a desert rat, out west, that he had met, while reading a local newspaper article at a cafe. The old desert rat had noticed a front page story was about a man found dead in death valley, and the old timer just remarked, "don't surprise me. The guy had no hat!!!!" Which he then advised the prof to never go into the desert, hatless. Only a fool would NOT wear a hat, he said.

Can't recall if this is the reason the prof took up hat wearing or not, the memory is fading. But the story has stuck with me. And made me realize that the old timers, were smart guys. Makes you wonder if our IQ's as a nation has slipped, except with the guys here. Our sun, kills folks every year, it's a dangerous star, that the old folks knew. Funny how knowledge gathered over eons is quicky forgotten, just with the change of style. Style seems more important than common sense. Just my opinion. Fedora

That's quite the statement someone made. It implies a knowledge hat Indiana Jones was in fact patterned after Edgar Banks.
I've never read this before, and wonder if the author of that is boldly making an assumption?

In a round about way. Indy was based on characters from the early serials, and those characters in the early serials were based on Banks. But we've all heard the story that the main genesis of Jones was Bond, so take it for what it's worth.

I don't know that the Serials were based on Banks. Inspired by people like Banks perhaps or embellishments of their lives, but I don't see them being based on one person.

I thought it was a pre-production costume test for Indy 5.

I have always believed the inspiration was Roy Chapman Andrews, a PhD who spent 25 years exploring the world, mapping unknown routes and shooting it out with Chinese bandits in real life. Read his "Ends of the Earth" or "This Business of Exploring" and it sounds like it was written by Indy.
