Question about nylon whips

Are the falls typically shorter on a nylon whip than a roo or cow leather whip? I've noticed this in some pictures I've seen and I noticed it on my excellent 10' from Steve Huntress....(awesome whip, BTW).

I've been wondering this, too, and meant to ask here but never got around to it. I've noticed it in pictures, and from the few nylons I've made, it seems like the shorter falls work better. I was thinking it might have something to do with the lack of taper in the paracord. Since there's no continuation of the taper, I think it might be better to make it shorter for balance at the end. I think leather falls can be longer since they're tapered, and that contributes to the overall taper of the whip, but with paracord, you're only adding length. I think when you start adding length with no taper it has a negative effect on the flow of the whip, and in this case the fall would get kind of "floaty" feeling.

Other thoughts?

Definately a "floaty" feeling when the fall is too long. You have to noodle around and see what lenght works for you. I usually never went over 13 inches on mine.

I make my falls about 18" on the nylons, and my Leather ones were longer, usually closer to 24". I've seen reference to leather falls being up close to 3 feet! I don't think I'd go for that.....

I too experienced this same problem when I first started making nylon whips and having the nylon falls not have enough weight/length to them. Many of you know it has been my goal during the last few years in creating an iconic raiders style whip in nylon and for this the short single strand fall in nylon would just not work (didn't have the right look and were always to light) So I started messing around with the idea of a twisted nylon fall and it seemed to work for both looks and functionality. This type of fall design allowed me to make them about 2-3 ft long and have the weight closer to a leather fall. Now all my nylon whips have my custom twist fall design and I would never go back to the single strand falls again, it gives the whip more of the leather look and feel because the falls are attached the very same way. So it is possible to have a nylon whip with a longer nylon fall and not have that flutter effect.
