How much DID your fedora cost?

In our quests for the screen accurate, the right felt, the right bow, no taper, etc. many of us have invested serious cash without even knowing it. When I add up all the hats I bought before getting THE ONE for me I figure I’ve spent at least $425.00. (I got an AB at $250 back in the day).
Now to some of you that’s one hat I know, but I’m Inexpensive Jones! I could’ve saved money buying the right hat first.

So how much have you spent on hats before finding THE ONE for you?

I don't even want to add them all up. This is the number one reason to not spend money on lesser quality hats but to move up the hat ladder and buy quality out the gate. It saves you a lot in the long run.

I spent about $60 (?) on my first Akubra, and then $100 on the very last AB Rabbit that Steve made. Then a very generous member here bought me an AB Beaver and that's enough for me!

Since joining COW, I've spent a lot of money on hats, but not all, or even most, are Indy hats. Thinking about just Indy hats, I think it is somewhere around $1,400. That includes a Keppler (no longer in my possession), Christy's (which I tore down after it shrunk and keep on blocking and reblocking for fun), Penman (I was one of John's first 10 customers so I got it for $200), and three ABs (Steve gave me the first one free of cost. I cannot stress how generous a guy Steve is! The third one is a grey CS hat ordered earlier this month). If we are talking all hats then it gets higher.

$80 or so + shipping for my Christy's, first Indy hat purchase....

$90 or so + shipping for my Fed IV, Carbon Grey (I don't wear it as an Indy hat per se, because it's not SA to any of the grey hats, but I guess it's basically an Indy fedora).

$400 on the AB I just ordered....I figured if I didn't grab one at the $400 price, I would never get an AB, and that somewhere down the line, I might regret not having THE hat made by THE man....so I've got a CS Fedora coming my way in about a year.

edit to add: and oh yeah, this is all since I joined the forum in March!

In order from when I ordered it.

Akubra Fed IV Deluxe: $140
Adventurebilt Deluxe: $650
Penman Grey Seaplanes: $265
Penman "special": Price still unknown
Penman Last Crusade: $320
Adventurebilt: $410.

So I guess the grand total is $1785 plus however the "special" Penman ends up costing.

Wow! I thought I'd spent a lot. I guess I get to keep the name Inexpensive. I would have been fine with spending my original $50 if I hadn't found this forum. That's why I try to stay away from the Jacket. Mine isn't SA and I won't care until I start hanging out there.

Well I bought a federation before managing to grab a previously enjoyed AB from the Cairo Bazaar. To me it's the perfect embodiment of a Raiders hat and for now I'm satisfied. But of course there are other Indy hats to have including my Magnoli HJ and an AB KotCS that will show up when it shows up! But like I said, I lucked out with the Raiders AB so between it and the Federation about $325.00.

AB purchased in Cairo Bazaar for approx $200.00

My search started when I was 8.

Disneyland hat: $40? Can't remember.
Disneyland hat: $40 again? I got older and my head grew
Federation III: $110
Adventurebilt: $250
Federation IV: $100

I've never had more than one hat at a time, the first Disney hat got lost in a move, the second one I gave to my ex, the Fed 3 was sold to another member here when I needed money, replaced a month later when the Fed 4 came out, and the AB still hasn't gotten to me. I look forward to that day, I only hope it gets here before the QM summit.

$540 total.

Peter Bros. Custom Indy [ToD] : $200 + shipping

I guess this just goes to show how addictive this hobby can be. If someone would have told me when I bought my first Indy hat that I'd be spending hundreds or thousands of dollars, I would have thought they were nuts. Yet here we are. Can't say that we haven't enjoyed it though!

If you count all the hats I've had over 28 years approximately $1,330.00 give or take. ;)
Here is the cost brake down with the latest being first.

SA AB: $600 2009

AB HENRY: $250 2009

HJ POET:$350 1989

STETSON TOD DELUXE: $80 1984

2 ANTIQUE FEDORAS: $50.00 1981, 1983

AB ca. 2006: $250
AB Dlx ca. 2007-08: $480

$730 total. Add the cost of a reblock of the AB and you're pushing $800.

I would almost be embarassed to tell you how much I have spent on hats over the years, except that this issues comes up every now and then...............I have spent over 10K in my lifetime looking for the perfect hat, froam any and every source you can thnk of............if Fedora chimes in, he and I are just about even.............

I think you are referring to my post. It's a custom hat John is making for me, and isn't one of the styles he has already created.

I have spent over 10K
I don't know whether to give you
Or [-X [-X [-X

I guess I'd better stick with the former so I don't have to do one of these :Plymouth:

I know.........Steve and I had the same conversation..........I'd get one that was right in the crown, but the brim was wrong..............than I'd cut too much off a brim, and ruin the look.................Resistols, Stetsons, DPs, Broners, and any other hat brand you can think of that was offered in the 80s...............fur felts, wool felts, questionable pedigrees, you name it, I have probably owned it.........then Indygear, and it all went downhill from there

I have spent every spare penny I can on my hat collection. I don't even want to know how much it adds up to. But to give you some sort of idea, i collect hats and I've got 25 fur felts (with 2 more on the way) and each one cost me between £80 and £200 (not including my baseball caps) and I haven't even placed an order with Marc yet... but that's hopefully on the cards in October.

Not all are fedoras and brand names include Stetson, Resistol, Akubra, Lock & Co, Bates, Herbert Johnson, Monti Cristi, Dunn & Co.

Styles include Top hats, bowlers, fedoras, trilbys, homburgs, bush hats, cowboy hats, panamas...

I'd better stop, my wallets in agony ;)

On brown hats, I figured out it was has been close to $2,100. The grey ones come out to about $700. But, I realized today that I haven't bought a new felt hat in at least three years. Maybe I'm due for a new one. Anyone here know of a good custom hatter? ;)

Not to sound repetitive but I don't even want to tally it up. Current count puts me at 20 paid for Indy hats and half of 'em are Adventurebilt products.

Then there are the vintage fedoras somewhere at 170+.......

A lot of money is my final answer! =;

Woe Michaelson, were you really talking to bink or are you hearing voices? And BTW I'm not sure if I want to know how much you've spent on fedoras. My wallet might go into cardiac arrest. OK tell me anyway.

Voices? Do you hear them too? :[

No, I'm afraid I've made Mitch 'gun shy' of late, and wanted him to realize he's honestly appreciated.....but sometimes it's an administator (who will remain nameless, but whose initials are 'm-i-c-h-a-e-l--s-o-n' :-$ ) who appears heavy handed in 'his' attempt to 'keep the peace'.

It's never my intent, but unfortunately sometimes that's how it's seen. That's why Mitch prefaced his remark as 'not wanting to go 'offtopic'.

As to your hat question, I've found that in life, it's safer to never discuss 3 things....religion, politics, and how much you've paid for your gear. =; ;)

Regards! Michaelson

Mark, I hear those voices too, but they don't sound like bink. Actually, the voices sound like Roger Daltrey. Maybe I should finally take that Who album off and start listening to something a little more modern. I think I'll do the Cars next.

Actually, Mitch, Michaelson, and bink don't exist. They're all fig newtons of your imagination.

If this haint had a clue how much he spent on hats over his lifetime... yeah, some questions are best left unanswered.

That's easy, not so much compared to some others, these are only guesstimates, since I'm not really keeping track:

Fed III $100
AB raiders $300 (still in the works)
Vintage Borsalino (Chapeau Vimenet) $65
Vintage Royal Stetson (non-Indy hat) $25

...and I think I've been successfully cajoled into staying on topic in this thread lol. :Dietrich:

Its a dress body.
Its my only Indy hat and I am pretty happy with it. I guess if I was going to buy another hat I would have to go with Oak-his stuff looks really good-Tom
