S&W conundrum

Howdy,

Several months ago I purchased a S&W 2nd Model Hand Ejector: made in Feb. 1916, numerous Brit proofs, nicely patinaed finish, smooth action, pretty tight lock-up considering its age. All in all, a super buy (even though its cylinder was converted to .45 ACP).

Here's the problem: it's not Indy. It has a 5 1/2 barrel, as all of these models did; of course Indy's gun barrel was 4". This is a historic firearm, so I WILL NOT cut it! But, I can't find any replacement barrels (2nd HE, 1917, 1950 Army, etc.) that will work. I've searched all over, but no dice. And, if I found one, can a replacement barrel be blued to match the faded finish on the gun?

So, I have a great historic weapon that does me no good in Indy World. Suggestions?

My suggestion is this; enjoy the fine weapon you have, display it proudly. It is alive with history, and is Indy in spirit. It's not like you should be using it for Indy gear, anyway. It's REAL!

Love it. Or give it to me for safe keeping. O:)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the piece. It's just that I've always wanted "the gun that shot the swordsman". ;) It's kinda gnawing at me, like having a really nice Indy jacket but knowing that there's a more SA jacket out there. So, much as I like this gun, I'd trade it for a Bapty clone. But it'd have to be really nice.

I'm glad you don't want to cut down the original barrel. It shows you respect the heritage of the gun. ;) Your best bet might be to patiently look for another barrel. If there are guns shows near you, you could always take your gun (or the barrel, at least) with you and look for a match. You also may want to talk with any local gun shops and tell them what you're looking for. They might be able to help and could have resources for such things that the public doesn't know about.

If you don't find the right length replacement barrel, you could purchase a long barrel, cut it shorter and fix the front sight.
