Magnoli HJ arrives!

Had a nice suprise yesterday.I arrived home to find a white box waiting for me with 'from Steve Delk' written on it and a new Magnoli Herbert johnson inside! :D
My first impressions are..I really like the new HJ felt and Steve's new blockshape. The felt is very similar to my vintage 50s herbert johnson felt, just a tad thicker-feels very substantial.I think it will soften up a treat over time.Holds the bash really well.
I love Steve's bash and the rich brown colour. The 'Magnoli/Herbert Johnson' stamped sweat band is a nice touch, and it has a nice white silk liner with Gold HJ crest.
More pics to follow on my noggin!-Can't wait to take some pics outside and see how the sunlight brings out the famous HJ red undertones(chucking down with rain at the moment! :( ).
Here's some pics as it arrived(I've just trimmed 1/8th off the brim to suit my face-shape).
Big thanks to Steve and Indy M! -I love this hat! :D

Yes this new felt is more substantial, but it will soften up like rabbit does. I just did not beat the hat up to soften it. But, give it a try and see what happens.

I keep the stock ribbon in place, but use new ribbon to replace the bows, as they are horrible. And since I use the same ribbon, it matches. Plus, HJ still puts the hold down stitches in the same place as they did with the Raiders hat. So, very film accurate.

This hat will be the most durable hat out of HJ in a few years. I absolutely loved the heavier felt, and it is so much more stable that what they used in the past. And being rabbit, it will get really soft, especially if you beat it up, etc.

The brim appears to be the same thickness as the Raiders hat, by the river. And these hatrs work up so nicely! Like a hat should. Quite a big change from the thin felt I have been working with from HJ. Those thin hats were a big pain to work with. And I was not always impressed with them, but this new felt, is very impressive. Great looking Raiders hat! Looks like its a new one right off the set of the movie. Steve does a great job with these hats, can't believe how good they look. Wear that one and enjoy the heck out of it! :TOH:

So are these new HJ felts/hat option available from Mag's right now? If they are... trouble for the wallet

Since I doubt many of these HJs will be posted here, and I want to show you what I start with, and what I end up with.

Here is the stock HJ as recieved. Now, I did iron the atomic curl out of the brim on this set here, and I turned it, and creased in ala Raiders.

Here's the side view of the stock HJ. I like the profile.

Now, here is the same hat, reblocked, and shortened from the 5 3/4 open crown height to 5 1/2, on this particular 7 1/4 sized hat. I also replaced the bow, and trimmed the brim.

And the side view.

As always, the hat appears taller than it looks in hand. Fedora

That hat is beautiful, Steve. I really like the color of that felt. It really brings out the ribbon. Very nice contrast. I never really wanted on of the these HJs becuase of the poor quality felt, but if the felt is pretty good, then I may just pick one up. I don't think I'll have one in time before you stop making them, though. At least, I'll have a couple of yours, though, when that time comes.

Mark Seven, that hat is beautiful. I'd like to see it on your head to see what that extra 1/8'' off the brim looks like. I always like to see when guys trim up the brim on their hats. Not everyone looks good in the SA specs.

That's my vintage HJ hatbox from 1928(still has original stamp on it!).It's made from a thick, hard cardboard type material.I got it from ebay.

Wow, I can't wait to get mine: yours looks great! I know it will be a little longer for me, as I only ordered it in January, but if it looks as good as yours or the one steve showed (which it undoubtedly will) I'm really going to love it.
