when i first started wearing hats about two and a half years ago i thought i enjoyed wearing my hats tight. however i soon realized that after an afternoon of nonstop wear i began to get a headache. so this has led me to post this thread- how tight, or for that matter loose should a hat fit?

I like to have to tug on my hats to get them down where I want them to sit. I don't like them tight, just snug enough. After about two minutes, I forget I even have it on and it won't move the whole day becuase it is snug. I definately don't want the hat to fit loosely.

I like my hats snug, although I don't mind if they are a little loose. Not too much though.

It should be so tight your eyes bulge! 
Headaches are far for the course so just toughen up. 
Or do what I do and get a hat that fits snug enough to not blow off and loose enough that after a while you don't even feel it's on your head.

To me a perfect fit is when the hat sits on the head, and after awhile you can forget it is there. Then, if you get into a windy situation, and have to tug the hat down low to keep it on, it should make you very aware the hat is on your head, IF, you have to wear it like this for any length of time. Because only a tight hat, pulled low will not blow off.
But, if you wear your hat low, all of the time, when you measure for a new hat, measure the widest part of your head, by moving the tape down to the brows. Otherwise that hat will be too tight if you measured above the brows, but never wore it in that position. It's all with where you measure. Fedora

Thanks for posting this Steve. I think I will use this to have people measure their heads. Worded very well my friend.

Not really a dispute, I don't think. I always tell my customers to pull the tape as tight as they want the hat to fit, that is, imagine the tape measure IS the hat. And I ask that they measure 1 inch above the brows, but only because most folks today, wear their hats in that position.
This has not always been the case in hats. Remember those old pics and old films where most of the hats sit way up, on the top of the head. In those cases, you would be fitted by the hatter by him measuring way up on the head, which is generally a smaller measurement if worn lower. Those "worn high hats" were the fashion at one time in hat history. And if you wore your hat high, you would of course take a smaller hat size than if you wore it low. Fedora

Probably part of the reason that vintage hats you find on ebay are usually not in the 7 3/8 - 7 5/8 range, but smaller. -M
