I got this from the Sales forum, reblocked as a Last Crusade by Steve. I was messing with the bashing last night after reattaching the lining, but since it was prebashed I feel like all I did was mess it up. Im looking for a sharp front crease ala Raiders, but I feel like its all uneven in the front. Also the ribbon on the sides is not attached in any way-I can slide my finger down inside. Is that normal?

Any thoughts?

I might be off, but if you want to go raiders-esque, the pinch should be even tighter than that.

Ive been working on it for the last little while.

Should the ribbon be affixed all the way around or should it slide off except for where the bow is? I haven't had a new one so I don't know if I need to stitch it down.

Tapered as in too small for my head, quite? Im kind of between sizes. This is a 7 3/8 and fits snug, but not tight-but the next one up I can turn on my head.

Please ignore the portly man behind the camera. I think I have the front crease centered more with the brim.

What ways are hat ribbons normally affixed? Just at the bow, like mine, or are they usually tacked down around the perimeter?

Hat ribbons can be affixed in any number of ways. I've seen some that are tacked just at the bow, others tacked at the bottom of the ribbon in spots around the hat, some tacked both top and bottom, and a few that put the stitches right in the middle of the ribbon! Even so, I've seen hats where the ribbon and bow is formed into a band and just slid over the top of the hat. In the long run, as long is it stays on the hat, what else matters?

From what I can see in your first few photos, you had a really nice LC bash. When you attempted to bash it for a Raiders look, it seems as though the side dents were bashed a little too deep and slightly too far back. Everyone has their own style, but looking down onto the crown, the dents should be about half way or slightly less than half the total distance of the crown, from front to back and could possibly account for the reason why it is tapered slightly. It looks like the front crease may be a little uneven, which you have noticed. If you are going for the Raiders look, the crown height should be about 4 3/4" in the front.

Okay, so, bring the front dents forward a bit and possibly measure the front and back crown height. Ill give that a go when I get home. I just don't want to ruin it.

It used to be, but not anymore. I use to copy the Raiders fedora, SOC hat, which had no stitches retaining the ribbon. Started doing it when I had a few customers demanding it for their hats, as to be film accurate. Then, I got more complaints from the other team. So, I went back to using the stitches.

Ran into the same thing with the height of the middle of the bow. Had complaints it was cinched too tight, so I changed it. Then the opposing team wanted it tighter...

These days, I just do em' like I THINK they should be. Unless I get a special request to do it a certain way.

Another change is the number of stitches used to hold in the liner. I copied my vintage sewed in liners at first, which had only a few long stitches holding in the liners. Then, I changed that to 3 times the number of stitches. Which I use today.

Crown heights changed from 5 3/4 to 5 1/2.

My hats were a work in progress for awhile. These days, each one is made consistent with the other, i.e. tacked down ribbons, more stitches holding the liner in, etc. Fedora

I know you are nervous about messing with the hat. But fear not! This felt is really great stuff. Short of bullet holes, there's not much you can do to hurt the hat. To me, it looks to have tapered a bit, but if it was originally a LC fedora, those hats do have a bit of taper blocked in. Fedora

This is a Fed III reblocked as an LC-im not trying to get full on Raiders, just trying to pinch the front and deepen the dents a bit. Im not sure how it was blocked before so I can't say what Steve did to the original blocking.
