Which hat looks better...on me?

Post by inexpensive_jones »

First of all, this is not a question of which is more SA, it is to settle a dispute as to which looks better on my head.
Since my head is not SA, I figure that it doesn't really matter if the hat is.
There are only 2 hats, one I'll call A the other B, though I'm sure everyone here will know the maker of at least one of them.

Here goes, which looks better on me:
A:

B:

No comments please on the mug...it's the only one I've got.

I like the first one with the relaxed pinch better. The line of the sharp pinch on the second visually leads straight down your nose. The first one looks more worn "for real" by you as opposed to the tighter pinch of the second which doesn't look as natural and "honest" to me. The first one looks like your hat, the second looks like Indy's hat on your head. My vote is for the first hat. ;)

Both hats crown height , brim dimension, and bashes look good on you. The first on looks better because the contrast between the ribbon and felt is right on and doesn't look out of place. The 2nd one ribbon is way to dark for the felt.

I´ll also vote for the first one. It looks really good on you. But the second one looks also like a very nice hat but the first one gives you that certain Indyish "it".

Seems pretty unanimous. Thanks for the input, you all agreed with me that the Adventurebilt looks best.
But then I didn't show you this one:

I like the second one better, especially from side view, to me the aesthetic differences from front and angled views are negligible.

I'll always go for a hat that doesn't look tapered so A gets my vote. I agree with what people say about the tight pinch looking a little unnatural. The felt of the Stetson looks nice but I'm sorry, I don't like the bow IMHO.

Please tell us what B is? Is it an HJ?

So what you're all telling me is that my $250 AB looks better on me than the $1 Berman's cowboy hat that I revamped. This is good for me because my family was saying that they don't see a difference, except my daughter who was saying she liked the Berman's better. I'd rather believe that my family has no eye for detail than I wasted $249 (which I know wasn't a waste). Thanks for the affirmation.

It sounds like I should do a little more revamping to the cowboy hat though.

Hat B and C look better on you ;) Excellent bashwork my friend ! Hat A looks too tall on you. The bash on it is cool though. But hat B and C have better specs to fit your face.

While the Raiders creases of B look fine on you, and it's a smart-looking hat (and you can't beat the bargain on it!), overall the A looks best IMHO. Contrary to Dutch's opinion , the height of the AB (which appears about the same as style B hat) is just right for you, and the relaxed pinch suits you quite well. Those are sharp looking fedoras (you wear even that Stetson well), inexpesive_jones--but I have to agree with the vast majority here about the AB looking the sharpest overall on you.

:TOH: best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

EDIT: Didn't mean to contribute to getting us off topic--please continue with the topic of discussion.

Dutch, sometimes I just don't get you. I have seen hats that you love that I wouldn't let my dog play with and then you can't see why A is better than B.

It's widely known here that Dutch has a grudge against Adventurebilt, although why I don't think anyone but him could say. I don't think they gave him a bad order or anything (as far as I know, he hasn't ever ordered from them). :-k Based on what I've seen, I think it's because he's determined that the only REAL Indiana Jones Fedora is the Herbert Johnson and so he dislikes AB simply because they're widely acknowledged to make a better hat than HJ. Who knows, I could be wrong. That's just what I've been able to surmise from his posts. Regardless, it seems clear to me that Dutch's beef with AB is based more on dogma than substance. -M

Gentlemen, my apologies--I did not mean to contribute to derailing this thread  and I therefore edited my previous post by deleting a parenthetical comment. Let's please get back to the topic at hand: these sharp looking hats.

Inexpensive_jones, what all was done in rebuilding that cowboy hat which came out so well? I'm rather impressed with how this rebuilt cowboy hat came out. Do you have any "before" pictures to show us in comparison to these great "after" photos? What kind of felt does it have, and how does it compare in felt stiffness to the AB and Stetson? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to learn more about that hat. :D

best wishes,

"A" fits your facial shape better. Very important when choosing any hat. B is too wide of a crown for your facial shape.(probably look ok if it were as tall as A, but appears to be just a bit shorter to me) B would probably look better on Dutch. And Dutch is entitled to his opinions. We all are. But, Dutch, you just got to learn to live with the fact that Indy will go out in an AB. You may not like it, but that's just the way it is. Folks in the future will remember Bernie's interview, and....."well,,,,I'll certainly tryyyy...." The last hatter will probably be remembered, because they made the LAST hat to adorn Indy's head. Quick rundown on the Stetson:
It went through many phases as I tried to get what I wanted. First pic: right out of the box, 2nd, tried for a Raiders look, not so good, from then on went for the LC.
Image
Misting it with water from a spray bottle worked the best for me. Tried using different things as blocks, but ended up making one according to directions on COW.

The cowboy hat is a Berman's 10X thoroughbred, and was given to me by a friend who bought it a thrift store for around a dollar. He tried shaping it with steam from a kettle and gave up. He said it wouldn't take a shape and since it was a little big for him anyway, gave it to me. When I got it home my wife immediately told me to "Get rid of it!" She's from Wyoming and left because she doesn't like cowboys. But I digress. This hat has the thickest darn felt I've ever seen. I took out the liner and ran hot water into it until it was soaked, (remember she told me to get rid of it) Then threw it on my block and let it dry. I did have to trim the brim which was 4" all around, so I used the AB as a template. I went to Walmart and got the grossgrain ribbon for 99¢. They only had black in the width I needed.

Unfortunately, in my haste, I never took before pics. Sorry, I regret it too.
The friend who gave the hat to me says it looks too tall, but he said the AB does too, and he said he couldn't reshape the hat to begin with, so what does he know about hats.

I definately think hat A looks the best on you. The relaxed pinch of the AB looks great with your facial features. I've been a Raiders style tight pinch fan for a long time, but am curious as to how a relaxed Last Crusade pinch would look like against my facial features. I don't have any way to try this out unless I buy a hat with that style I guess. ;)

Thanks Snapbrim76! :D

That's an early AB. Glad you think it looks fine as is. So do I! :D I wouldn't ever want to change this hat by any means. I love it the way it is. Problem is it is a little big on me now since I cut my hair shorter....solution, buy another hat lol. ;) I think when I do order I may get one like inexpensive_jones' AB. Who knows? That may be awhile anyway. :)

I did see the redo of B inexpensive_jones, and I really like what you've done with it! Very nice indeed! I was just curious, what type of bash/style of hat is your AB? Did it have a turn? I don't think I caught it if it was mentioned somewhere.

Not sure which one you mean.
There are 3 hats on this thread: the AB which we all know about, The Stetson Temple which is rabbit or rat or something furry, and a Bermans which is the mystery hat. It says 10x on the leather sweatband so it could be beaver or a beaver blend, but I can't say for sure. Is that the one you meant?

Thanks for the compliments, my AB is a CS straight from Steve. No rebash or anything. It was built on the same block as Ford's and fits me perfect, so I need hats to monkey with to keep me from fixing something that isn't broken. But I admit I wear the Bermans just as much as the AB.
