Was the opening scene Raiders hat turned?

Post by LANDINGPARTY »

I know the Raiders hat was turned. Was it ever determined if the opening scene of Raiders when we first see Harrison Ford in the fedora was a turned hat? thanks

HF's hat wasn't turned in the opening scene.

The only time I can tell for sure it was turned is in the SoC. I think it was done then to give Indy that much more of a disheveled look.

After watching Raiders over the weekend I'm sure that in the senes that people say the hat is not turned it is in fact turned,It's just that HF is not wearing fedora turned.Look at the pinch,no way does it line up with the center of his face :-k .

Assuming you believe in the turn (I'm a doubter, at least); I had an extensive discussion with Steve Delk some years ago about the opening scene. What I learned from the man who has studied the hats so very carefully is that "the opening scene" was filmed in two parts, possibly with two different hats - outside shots, and interior shots. Thus, we have the Waterfall and the Idol Grab hats. The waterfall/exterior shots do not have the characteristics we associate with the turn, while the Idol Grab hat does. Although my lovely guest, Canyon, points out that there are a few shots inside the temple that look "unturned" which might suggest an inconsistency with the interior hat.

My two and 9 10th cents.

In my opinion, every hat but the Kipu Falls hat was turned. I too see inconsistancies in the temple hat, but they are turned hats.

I think the hawaii hat ( all scenes before the temple ) ( can't comment on the running away from hovitos )
Is different. Its much much lighter than the other hats in colour, when we see it in full (sun) light its very light.. when the hat in cairo in direct light is very dark brown ish still ! besides it not being turned it does not match any of the other hats in the movie...

I never thought the opening scenes hat was turned either. And I agree with you Dutch that we saw a couple of different shades of brown in that film as well. To me, the SOC hat has a reddish undertone to it, whereas the opening hat, was more of a brassy undertone.

I think the Idol grab hat was also the brassy undertoned hat. It appears to be to me. Fedora

I definately see that brass undertone in the idol grab hat. The hat in the rest of the temple, however, I see a reddish undertone. You get a really nice shot of it as Indy avoids the light and as he walks into the idol room. Definately not the same as the idol grab hat.
