in a couple of months i am going to seriously start looking.

btw, off topic of the this thread that i started, but how does one go about using gun broker, specifically shipping a gun. i understand that you bid or buy an item, just like on ebay. but say i won an auction. since it is a gun it has to go to an ffl dealer. i send a usps money order (or cash or what the seller wants), but at what point do i let the dealer that will be recieving the item know that i am expecting said item. my friend who uses gun broker alot says i should just wait until the item i want is for sale inside the state lines & then just pick it up myself & pay cash.

help!!! :? :? :?

I did see that thread and I will hold you to that deal!

I used to long after the MkVI (and had to pass on an insanely good deal for one some years ago because I simply didn't have the money at the time) but after seeing the WG, I have to say I prefer the look of the bird's head grip.

Hey Bruce Wayne!

Glad to see your interest in the Webleys. The WG (Webley Green) model was made before the MK VI. Basically pre 1900. The birds head grip is one of the major differences, however there was a target version made that also had a square bottom grip like the MK VI. Fellow COW member Wade Egan has one of those. The major difference between the two guns is the frame and cylinder size. You can see in the comparison photos that the WG has a longer frame area in front of the trigger. It also has a longer cylinder. Another point is that it doesn't have the triangular piece in front of the cylinder as is found on the "MK" models.

Now to your question on how to purchase on Gun Broker. All handgun sales must go through a FFL holder. If you win an auction on Gun Broker you first make payment. You then need to have your FFL person send a copy of his license to the FFL person the seller is using (if not himself). The gun has to be shipped FFL to FFL. You then pick up the gun from your FFL after doing any paperwork your state may need to have done.

The process doesn't change much even if you purchase one within your state. You will still need to go through a FFL person to do all the neccessary paperwork. You can not "just pick it up myself & pay cash".

Now here is an interesting point that most people don't know. If you decide to purchase a WG (Webley Green) you willl NOT have to make the purchase through a FFL and you do NOT have to file any paperwork!!! You can buy it directly from the seller and have it shipped directly to you!! Since the WG was made before 1900 it is considered a "non-firearm" and does not fall under the normal rules of transfering a handgun. No FFL hassle!! This is what I was able to do when I got mine. The same thing applied when I just recently purchased my S&W Safety Hammerless .32 TOD handgun.

Good luck on your quest and I'm sure whatever you find it will become your most prized Indy item in your collection!!

Here is a website with a good description of the laws regarding pre 1899 firearms. You will see the Webley Green listed towards the bottom of the page. As I said no FFL required for anything made before 1899!! \:D/

Yes I know the laws are strange. #-o But I didn't make them, I just follow them and use them to my best advantage!! :[

There are those in the collecting field that state that Green (Greene?) actually had nothing to do with the WG revolver at all. Green supposedly worked for Webley at one point and invented (or modified) I believe the stirrup locking system.

The WG is actually supposed to stand for "Webley Government."

The Green error came from an author's mistake I believe in the book "The Webley Story."

And I know I've perpetuated the Green myth myself in the past. I just call it the Webley WG now, because that's what's on the pistols themselves. :)

Fortunately, the Blue Book of Gun Values is intelligent enough to know there is no such thing as a Webley Greene. They have it listed as a Webley Improved Govt. Ninety percent value is $2k.

Check out the collectorsfirearms website. They have a 99% mint WG, in original box. Lettering on the gun is still in gold. WOW! Great for reference pics. Only $6500 . . .
