What do you figure the length of the Raiders bow is? 5, 5 1/4? regards, Fedora

Allowing the slight extension of the bottom bow, 5 1/4" would be my guess. The bows I've made look too long if I go beyond this length.

Depends on the size of the hat I'd say.
But now that I come to think about it: actually my double bow has exactly the same length as the crown is high...
At least that was how Marlene from Optimo did it on my chocolate brown and my London grey hat and I copied that, since I liked the lenght, when I attached a new ribbon.
I think the ribbon width of the ribbon is also important. A 5 1/4" bow might look perfect on a 1 5/8" ribbon, but on a 1 3/8" ribbon it might look too long.
Hmm... that didn't really help, did it?!

Marc

I've done the math on this a hundred times over the years, and I don't think the bow was more than 5 inches long- maybe a litttle less. Take this picture and measure the width of the ribbon. Measure at the front of the front bow, because the back is overlaping. Asuming that the ribbon is 1 and 1/2 inches wide, say the ribbon on your screen measures 21mm wide- divide by 3, and that's 7mm for each half inch of ribbon, doubled, 14mm per inch. ---Now measure the length of the bow on your screen and divide it by 14 and the number you get will be the length in inches. I know there are corrections to be made for the curve of the bow, ect, but I believe they cancel each other out.
Or just try this- position the thumb and forefinger of your left hand at the corresponding points on your head that match where the ends of the bow are in this picture, then remove your frozen hand from your head and measure the distance.
