Interesting info about how TN borrowed a Raiders Jacket

Post by TheExit148 »

I apologize now if this opens a can of worms/pours salt on old wounds, but I found these two articles regarding Tony making the INDY IV movie with some regards to the Raiders jacket. Doesn't say who gave him the Raiders jacket, but gives a little more insight to it. The weird part is that both articles state "Tony Novak", but I've seen that a lot on the net regarding his work. Both articles are big reads regarding KOTCS too, so check them out for that as well.

http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pb ... e=printart

Heres a quote from above article:

Pollack moved his search for the correct materials and builders from England to Germany to the United States. California leather clothier Tony Novak borrowed the original leather jacket from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and produced a prototype overnight that Pollack, Spielberg and Ford approved of.

“We ended up playing around with the jacket,” Pollack says, “and finally got the right skin, the right dimensions, the right buckles.”

http://enewsi.com/news.php?catid=190&itemid=13228

A quote from this article:

He also decided to make Indy’s jacket slightly bigger, in order to accommodate the padding Ford would need when doing his stunts. Using stills from the original films, he meticulously designed the instantly recognizable leather jacket, then searched for someone who could make it. That search spanned the U.S., the U.K. and Europe. Finally, costume supervisor Bob Morgan brought in a leather clothier named Tony Novak from El Segundo, Calif. Novak said he needed only a sample jacket to make a prototype overnight. But the Lucasfilm Archives, which had kept the original jacket safe for more than two decades, required tight security; Pollack had an assistant accompany the jacket to Novak’s offices.

“About nine o’clock that night, the jacket was back,” Pollack says. “And it was perfect. I couldn’t believe it. So, I asked him to make 30 of them! I love that guy.”

Take what you will from it, but it seems that Bernie had a lot to do with TN getting the Raiders jacket, and he arranged for him to get it to create his prototype. I know that people have said that he was given the LC jacket for his prototype, but maybe they gave him the Raiders jacket to work with.

Tony had access to the Keppler Flightsuits prototype that also formed the basis of the LC jacket. The article's author made a mistake in referring to it as the Raiders jacket.

I think its a case of the writer stating the facts wrong. Notice its not quoted. Most people tend to lump things into either "Raiders" or an all-serving "Indiana Jones".

It was an LC jacket Tony was given for the movie. The Raiders for his Indy1 came afterwards.

Very interesting research on your part, but I asked Tony about it and he told me that the CS jacket was based on the Last Crusade jacket. He's pretty sure it wasn't Raiders jacket. He was given the Raiders jacket much later and after the movie was finished. Dunross

And as Michaelsen would point out, it's pretty telling that they didn't check their facts considering that they already started out misspelling Tony Nowak's name... ;)

Yeah, the spelling of his name is the worst part. Makes it sound less credible. Still thought it was interesting to share. Who knows what they were thinking when they wrote the articles.

I recall reading that Tony had already done the Mutt jacket for the production before he did the Indy proto, so he wasn't exactly brought in to do the Indy jacket, he was already there.

That's the story I've heard as well. The Indy jacket was pretty much shoved in his hands when he was delivering the completed Mutt jacket, and was asked if he could do the job.

This is what Tony told me as well. The way he described it, he brought in the Mutt jacket and Bernie was stressed because he couldn't find a vendor to deliver the Indy jacket he wanted. Tony looked at the jacket and told him he could do it and made the prototype overnight.

I'm sure its been posted here before but does anyone know the details of how he got the job to make Mutt's jacket? I know he's made a lot of film jackets but was there a bid out for Mutt's like there was for Indy's?

Talk to Tony and when he answers the phone you will hear "NoVak". That's how Tony pronounces it and whover was writing the article/story forgot Journalism 101 and asking someone to spell their name for the sake of accuracy.

Yes, Tony will say he was given the jacket unexpectedly and completed what he was asked to do in a very short time to come up with THE jacket.

I've not heard the story about this but he did make the jacket for Terminator 2, correct? Pure conjecture here but that might have had something to do with it as he had made a biker jacket for production before.

Yeah, I've thought the same thing but didn't know if anyone here might have any more info beyond that.

One of the funniest things Tony told me in our conversations was about Bernie/whoever coming to him about doing the Indy movie with Ford and Shia La Boeuf and them making a big deal about it. So Tony goes "Shia Le Beouf? Who the MOD Edit is that?! Should I know?"

He made the jackets for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, NOT Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I believe Bates Leathers made the jackets in the latter.

Little known fact is that Jess is the failed Terminator prototype:

They couldn't get him to kill people. All he did was point his finger and go "pppbbbbttttt!!!"

I suspect that's what happened too, but I've noticed when you get his answering machine it does sound more like Nowak (with a soft w ) than Novak. Many Polish people I know with that name seem to have given up and just spell their name with the V

Thats not right :P this movie was made 16 years before T3;) so you could say
The t3 is a much better attempt of that jacket style.

But did Tony make this particular jacket? Or wasn't he a jacket maker back then?

I just asked a simple question... apparently you don't know the answer yourself! Never-mind I was just curious about that jacket I had always assumed Tony had made that as well.

He's been a jacket maker many more years than that. I don't think he made that one though.

That's really a poorly made looking jacket. It is interesting how the stitching on it ( and it looks like it's just patterning stitched on) resembles the T3 jacket though.
It's just a similarity of appearance , the T3 is different and made of many separate pieces and very difficult to make. Makers aren't normally allowed to include their label but TN was for the T3 jacket.

Tony told me the story of the T3 jacket job and how he got it, it's another that just came to him at the last minute.

I found this interesting/funny as well
“I thought it would be easy to copy, but it wasn’t because nobody was around who had done it originally.”

For the first three films in the “Indiana Jones” series, director Steven Spielberg and his costume designers used companies based in England to design and build the character’s leather jacket and fedora.

None of them, Pollack discovered, were still in business
