I am sure this question has been asked many time over here, but i am new so i'll ask it. I am looking for a first pistol. I am ex-military. I plan on getting a pistol for theatrical purposes. would i be better off going to a pawn shop and using blanks or should i get blank firing only replica of some kind?

Everyone has different needs and wants. I prefer to go the blank firing only route -- I would hate to lose a real pistol....besides for gearheads in Canada it's tough to get anything other than a green water pistol -- and I am sure they will want permits for those soon too.

It depends on if you want a revolver or auto. A real ammo shooting auto will have to be modified to shoot blanks, a real amm shooting revolver won't.
You can get blank firing repros of autos that are pretty much identical to the real thing for relatively cheap- $150.00 to $200.00 bucks.

And modifying a real automatic pistol to fire blanks will require you to basically ruin a barrel. Also the diameter of the hole in the plug will be determined by your altitude above sea level, after all it all about pressure.
