Vintage style jacket

I know it's not an Indy but here's a jacket I recently had made at San Diego Leather. It's very heavy cowhide not listed or shown on their site but the grain is great and they did it in two weeks from a phone call and a picture.

The photos aren't very good but I can tell you the quality is exceptional and the service great. The price was pretty competitive as well. I was quite surprised at the amount of detailing they were willing to do at a reasonable price.

Nice, I liked it on the Fedora Lounge too. Was it 320 US, I forget.

nice jacket. Certainly has a vintage vibe.
Is it based on an existing old jacket?

that jacket looks really nice flyer....congrats. $320 is a steal for a custom.

would you be able to compare the quality to any of the known offerings?

It was $320.00 but if I would have bought a standard size I could have got it for around $290.00.
I originally read all the reviews on the various manufacturers on the Fedora lounge and here and
these guys (San Diego leather) weren't well received for their military or Indy jackets. That being
said I really wasn't looking for an A2 or Indy but rather a vintage style heavy leather jacket that
was durable. And their motorcycle jackets looked pretty good and they are priced competitively.

I emailed Nancy and attached a picture of the Highwayman and told here what changes I wanted
and she sent me a quote and turn around time. At that price level I figured it wasn't a big risk
so I gave them a shot. The only changes they could make might be to set the arm holes about
1/2" higher. The custom charges I incurred were for taking a standard 44 and tapering it 1.5
inches, thinsulate lining and extending the sleeves an inch.

I will say their 44 is closer to 46 and if you don't plan to wear a sweater or something underneath it
I would suggest ordering a size smaller than you normally wear and start customizing from there.
For reference I am 6-0, 201 lbs with a 45" chest and normally wear a 44L but If I wanted a snug fit
the 42 with an inch added to the sleeves would be the ticket.

That's a tougher question than it appears. The quality of the workmanship and leather is on par or better
than any of the many leather jackets I've owned over the years. The hide it was made from is certainly
superior to Schott (which I've owned), US wings and any of the other usual online houses offering similar products.

I won't say it is superior to Aero as I've never owned their heavy steerhide or horsehide jackets but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money and wait months to get the product. When I got this jacket I was a bit dis-satisfied with the fit around the waist and called Nancy and she had me send it back and that's when she tapered it. She even offered to re-make it in a 42. The best part was they had it back within a week.

I think this company has the ability to make some nice jackets but you must be very specific when you tell them what you want. I know their website leaves a lot to be desired and it would seem they have access to some pretty decent leather if you ask. Their standard cow, goat, and lamb isn't bad (they don't offer horsehide), but when I said I wanted something heavier they said how heavy and what color and I got what I wanted.

For a company that said they don't do custom they did a good job and saved me some money in the process.
Keep in mind when you compare one vendors product to another of equal quality it really is individual preference and it becomes even harder when we order online many times sight unseen and that's why these forums have value.
There is nothing better than unbiased opinions by actual consumers when rating a product or vendor.

One last thing, If you consider doing business with this company ask for or email Nancy she seems to have it together and she is a principal there.

I can tell you that my aero is very good jacket. It's heavy Horside, and the price it wasn't very expencive, due to Pound respect Euro. So it's very heavy and very strong to break. On the bike it's ok
