Indy's Pocketknife

On a rather esoteric note: I have an old Camillus pocketknife that looks amazingly like the one Indy takes out of his pocket to use when he starts to cut Marion loose in the tent in the Egyptian Desert...of course, he changes his mind and closes the pocketknife! Just wondered if anyone had noticed it before. As the King of Norway once stated: "A man never knows when he might need a good knife."....to rescue damsels in distress.

I think You better post some pics right away :!:
The hunt for the pocketknife has been fruitless - until now, so
I belive we are many, who really want to see if we really got the "right" knife now.
Best regards

JAN, I wish I could post some pics, but I do not have the ability to do so right now! The model # on my Camillus pocketknife is #23...it's about 4 1/2" long closed, with 2 blades...a large spearpoint blade and a shorter pen blade. And this is just my opinion, after all! I will try to get some pics in the near future.

RonC, where in Texas are you?

RonC,
I've often meant to mention Camillus in this regard! I'm glad you did. It would be period correct and it's made in NY.
My favorite knife is my USN marlin spike Camillus. That marlin spike is very handy. (If you don't believe me, read Riddle of the Sands!) I like to think of the Camillus marlin spike as the knife Indy should have carried!

Ron, my dad says the same thing you say every time we watch Raiders. I believe that's what it may be.

I respectfully disagree. It's not a Camillus. Plus the knife needs to be longer. This is old ground we have covered here and at the old forum many, many times before. Look through the old posts.

Chamorro, you very well may be correct, sir. I was speculating, based upon my observations and my knowledge of cutlery. Others may have better information...should you have this info, please share it with me. Thanks!

Giddings, hmmmm. Must be one of those teeny Texas towns? I'm no tsure how close you are to the DFW area, but a few of us from the forum are getting together for dinner. There's a thread in the EVENTS section and you're more than welcome to join us.

Chamorro, et al, I went back and found the video capture of the scene with the pocketknife, and I stand corrected! In my huimble opinion, this pocketknife GREATLY resembles a spear-pointed, lockback single-blade knife produced in Solingen, Germany by several different companies. I'm not sure if they're being produced any longer, but I am attempting to find out. Puma, Henckels and a few others produced this design. They used to be quite common. The flat nickel silver bolsters, and the quality and color of the stag are the "giveaways" in this case.

I have a Bulldog knife that's pretty close. They are also made in Germany. Perhaps the Sheffield theory will be debunked? Post some pics if you can.

Chamorro, I will try and do that.

I will be going to the Central Texas Knife Show in Austin this weekend, where I will attempt to locate one the the "Indy" pocketknives. I'll let you know what I find!

No luck at the Central Texas Knife Show! I did see one Solingen folding knife that was similar, but it had square bolsters, and was shorter overall. The quest continues!

Gentlemen,
This is a standard Black Jigged Bone Handle pocketknife. You will have a hard time finding the same rounded blade style as the one in the movie. Most pocketknives now incorporate a sharper tapering blade. Smokey Mountain Knife Works offers several different sizes of knife in this style. They have slight curve to them but are very cheap ranging from $30 - $80. I visit their store and museum everytime I hit Gatlinburg, TN. Check out their website, and I am sure you will something very close to what Indy carried.

Blackthorne, I know the knives of which you speak. However, if one looks, you can still find one of the older Solingen folders like the one Indy carries...I just gotta keep looking!

Here are some pics of what is offered at Smokey Mountain Knife Works. There are several that are similar and could pass for Indy's pocket knife. From this pic angle it is hard to tell if it is a Worn Sowbelly, Pocket Worn or Doctor's Knife style. I don't think it is a canoe style.

Blackthorne, et al, when I find the type of pocketknife to which I refer, I'll try to post some photos.

I don't know, I think the Camillus idea deserves another look. They ARE the makers of the official Boy Scout knife, and as we all know, Indy was a Boy Scout.

If it is a Camillus, it is probably close to the #27. Which has two front blades, one is identical to the one Indy pulls out in the tent.

Wow, in Rob-DFW's shots there, you can see the the scales on the knife are stag. They look brown directly from the side, but you can see on the angle that they're bone colored on the edges.

Looks to be just a single blade pocket knife.

Amigos, I still believe this pocketknife is a Solingen-made (by Henckels, Bulldog, Kissing Cranes, etc.) single blade lockback that once was quite common. I'm still looking for one....when I finally get my hnads on one, I'll get some photos on here!

If anyone would like to host them for me my Yahoo account is screwed up... and I'm not sure how to post directly onto the board so if you wanna see them host for me or shoot me a PM.
It's my grandfather's old Boyscout knife...he gave it to my dad...when I was over at my dad's house I was talking about Indy's knife and my Dad gave me this one...(the one you'll see in the pics)
So I have my Grandpa's Hat (Dobbs) and his pocketknife as well.
