Gary White?

Post by Restless Dreamer »

So, I was reading the list of Indy hats in the sticky topic (NOTE: it really should be updated...Crambes, DP, Chirsty's Adventurer, Explorador, Henry and ABD are missing), and my eye falled on the name Gary White. I never saw it mentioned on the various threads of this section, and I noticed that Gary White's Indy has nothing to do with a Raiders fedora, judging by the photo I saw. I was even wondering why it is on the list :[

Does somebody have one? Can you post some photos and a review?

I can only give you my personal experience, which has not been good.

In 1993, I sent White my first HJ Poet to reblock, and he did a terrible job, shrinking it to a size that no longer fit me.

He also told me that Herbert Johnson was not the original maker and that the man who made the original movie hats was dead.

That came as a surprise to Richard Swales of HJ, who shortly afterward sent me a letter confirming that he had made the original movie hats and that he was still very much alive and kicking.

Others have reported that White claims to have made the hats for LC.

When I posted this info before, a couple of other members vehemently defended White, so you'll have to read all responses and decide for yourself whether he is worth dealing with.

You asked, and my personal advice would be a big CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Ahhhh!!! I LOVE it when hatters make claims to have made the hats for any of the Indy movies, but except them, nobody can confirm this

Again, I didn't catch the sarcasm. This guy " ;) " and this guy " " normally tip me off. The internet doesn't lend itself to sarcasm. So, again, sorry jnicktem.

No problem... usually what I do is make a remark that to the readers would seem absurd (like saying that Marc didn't make an Indy hats) and leave it at that. It is my hope that the people reading it would think it is so absurd that is must be a joke.

But you're right about the smilie thing... I don't use those very often. :-k

On a more serious note, never heard of this "White guy" by the way, I must have missed a thread or two. Anyone can summarize the story for me or is it worth reading it?

The Gary White hat was an offering in the early days of IndyGear and long before we had half the offerings we do today. I don't recall ever seeing one in person, though. I don't know a whole lot about them other than that.

In spite of the muddy waters regarding his claims, he does make nice hats. I have one, as was mentioned in the OLD linked threads.

Quality work all the way.

Gary White is a real hatter. He’s been doing it for a very long time. Can he deliver an Indiana Jones hat that will meet most of your expectations? Probably not. Most hatters don’t specialize in one hat. They’re limited to the blocks that they have on hand. Most would not create a block for one hat.

Still, he used a 100% beaver body on the hat I got from him. Could even be the same felt as Fedora uses, though this was made 5 years before Fedora produced the Adventurebilt. It was a good hat, though it was too hot, stiff, and heavy for my taste. My recollection of Gary was that he was a real great guy.
