bash that brim!

Post by Indiana G »

all right. the raiders hat (what's that? ) ........most of the scenes, his hat is turned which will warp the brim to give you that nice raiders swoosh. alot of you will take out your brand new open crowned whatever, place it on your head and then turn it.....only to find a minor warp in the brim......nowhere near the proportions of the angled snap down brim as viewed from the right hand side and nowhere near the elegant transitioning curl on the bow side (reaching to the back of the hat where the brim is most prominently curled/flipped up. you can see what i'm talking about on either the raiders hat compilation or from the side views of my pecan hat in the "crowning achievement" thread of mine.

now for those of you that only get the slight warpage, you can steam in some more prominent transitions to get it to sit where you want it to sit. for me, i always do a raiders 'scrunch' which is strategically executed to accentuate the look of both sides as well as to soften up the felt and promote the floppiness. the scrunching that i do are all along the lines and creases of the bash and i do believe this is the way the raiders hat got sat on (at least once)....the way the center pinch lines up with the angled snap down of the right side brim, the way the back left of the hat curls up all align in this compaction......gotta be more than coincidence. here's a pic of what i mean:

Image

anyways with this method, you do not promote any unsightly felt ripples or folds and this scrunching keeps the brim in the nice raiders look. bear in mind that this may not work on everybody so don't use it unless you know how your hat is going to react. i'm planning to sit on the hat in this orientation to bring out more of the SOC look.....but you also have to sit on the crown to mushroom it out ;)

so....do not do this and then PM me that i ruined your hat. don't do this unless you are comfortable with your bashing skills and you want to promote an SA raiders brim......good luck :D

btw.....the picture is reversed so bear that in mind. the bow of the hat is on the left side of the screen if that helps.

I think Steve brought this up some time ago. he calls it clapping the hat or something like that. I can't remember the exact wording.

Some time ago, a rather long time ago, I saw something to this effect on U-Tube. Anyone else recall this?

Yes! It's on a Fed Dlx right? There's no audio (minus some heavy breathing near the camera mic) but he puts the hat through the ringer.
Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LVl7pFr ... re=related.

Is this the one you're thinking of alphared6?

no results cuz the hat already looks the same as in my pecan fed thread. this is more like maintenance and how to soften her up.

i was trying to show exactly how to scrunch the hat to promote the brim shape.....that akubra video is just..well....smushing ;)

The "scrunch"? I have to say that pecan's brim looked SA. I too have rolled the sides of the brim right at the transition to get less of a 90 degree brim break.

Thanks for the tips, Indy G. I'm going to try this with my Keppler. I don't know why but it's become my experiment hat. I do all sorts of things to that one. The upside is that it keeps looking better and better.

Well, thanks, G. I tried this and my hat burst into flames right in my hands!!

No, I scrunched it first, then got it in that shape and sat on it and then sat on the crown for good measure. I messed up a little as I got a few "creases" in the brim but these smoothed out and the brim does have a much better swoop so  to you, my friend!
