What hat do you think has the best Indy Raiders look
out of these hats What do you think has the best Indy Raiders look.
ex:
- oval all block shape
- color felt
- stiffness or the lack of
- ribbon color
- bow construction and stitching
- over all quality
- turn
btw i didnt put AB as an option cuz i know that would win.

Excellent! And I now say, based on the many photos and reports I've seen, that the Christy's have gotten the most consistent good results. It might not have the durability of the most of the others, but the look and approximation of the felt are there. Plus, the minor modifications needed aren't much beyond what other hats would require.

So, I assume these are all non-custom hats since JPD is still not in the mix. Actually, it looks like PB custom is there, so if it were me I would swap out dorfman for JPD, dorfman is not a screen accurate block shape by any means and would lose anyway.

Re: What hat do you think has the best Indy Raiders look
Ok, just so we have this straight and avoid the debacle of debate over who makes the best hat or blocks the best hat. We are only discussing which hat in the list makes the best looking general Raiders look? We're not going back & forth on which is more durable, or taper the least, or which has the best felt body, we are comparing which one when bashed & worn by an individual will most likely resemble our beloved Raiders Hat, correct? How far off am I?
Now, I must ask as well, does this mean any hat in the list, stock out of the box, or, can the hat be "reblocked" before bashing? I just want to clarify before it spirals like most discussions of this ilk. TCM, you may want to add some ground rules, but that is entirely up to you.
I would love to see a fairly nice discussion on the merits of what makes a good Raiders bash without the usual donnybrooks on the quality of felts, ribbons & sweatbands.
I put down my vote for the Christys because of all the visuals that I have seen of it in the past year & a half. I have viewed some good examples of a rabbit felt hat that has been pushed & tweaked into a Cairo, Raven Bar & even something resembling the Flying Wing Fight Hat. Granted it is probably not the best hat in the world but it seems to take to a Raiders bash fairly easy. That is just my opinion from what I have viewed, for what it is worth, which probably isn't much in this economy.
Now have fun kids!
Cheers!
Dan

Yep just the look although taper is part of a hat's look so thatDanielJones wrote:Ok, just so we have this straight and avoid the debacle of debate over who makes the best hat or blocks the best hat. needs to be taken into account when choosing but not duriblity.
And lets not get too complicated, so lets go with "stock out of box" since any
fur felt hat can be reblocked.

Don't forget to look at bow. How it's put together. I'm I to understand this is rabbit felt only because in a months you will have 2 more examples.
I'm shocked that oval all quality is on the list and the christy's has that many votes.

Re: What hat do you think has the best Indy Raiders look
From the hats I own, these are the characteristics that appeal to me the most:
Penman: high quality felt-beaver, best all around-er for the price ($250) to COW members
Akruba Fed IV Deluxe: high quality, dense rabbit/hare felt, color appears to be darker than the movie hat, best--most comfortable sweatband
JPD: thick, high end rabbit felted fedora for only $125, during the "October Curry special." Service/follow-up needs to be considered before ordering.
Christy's: possibly the closest to the Raiders color and sports "the Raiders look", very easy to bash, ribbon attachment and bow leaves something to be desired, the felt body is soft/floppy, while the brim is stiff. Felt quality is adequate to ample. Members report severe taper with heavy use. For $100 +/- not a bad deal, but depends on intended use. Arguably a generic Herbert Johnson. Probably not a good hat for heavy use and severe weather conditions.

But you have listed oval all quality.

This thread is humorous, and points out that we're all looking for something different out of our fedoras.

I picked JPD strictly based on all the photos I have seen of all the models of listed hats. I don't own one, but the tall crown really is what I see when looking at the screen that sets raiders apart from later films (apart from the bash of course). can I eat food while in the back seat? jk.
