Keeping those sides straight

Post by Cabinetman »

How long can one expect before one's fed begins to taper? and, What preventive maintenance or storage practice should be adhered to?

Specifically speaking, I got my PB Custom on Monday and I am not entirely too sure how to leave it when it's not on my head, so that it will always (practically speaking) look like it does now. Flat on its brim? Upside down sitting on the crown? Hanging on the brim upside down like it was shipped? Perhaps using the same box? What about wrapping it up looslely (also, like it was shipped)?

Thank you, hat lovers galore.

I've had mine for a while now, which I recieved second hand, and it's still pretty straight. From the stories of the previous owner, the sucker got a pretty good wearing in, so in my opinion these are some pretty resiliant hats.

Upside down is the best way to prevent taper. Especially, after coming in out of the rain.

Here's some tips I found at Shushans Hat Retailers website:

1.) Always handle your hat by the brim. (Do not pinch the crown to pick it up as this will result in misshapen crowns and may split the felt.)
2.) Never rest your hat on it's brim. Always turn it upside down and set it on the crown, so that the brim doesn't flatten out.
3.) Clean your hat regularly using a soft bristle brush or a hat sponge. Brush counter clockwise with the nap, starting at the bow.
4.) If you get caught in the rain, turn the sweatband out and let the hat stand on the crown until dry.
5.) Never apply direct heat to your hat as this will cause it to shrink and/or lose it's shape.
6.) Always store your hat in a hat box to help keep it clean and looking new.

I would add that you need to rest the fedora on a cloth like a heavy woven cotton sheet or towel.

So, what do you do with the hat at night? I have a hat rack, used to put it on there, is there a problem with doin that? I need a good place to put my fedora at night so I can get to it quickly in the morning, before the cofe kicks in. An ideas?

Hang it on the hat rack. I've done it for decades, and no taper to date on any hat I've owned from this practice. Regards. Michaelson

Yep, mine go on the hat rack as well, unless they are wet. Then all that I do is sit mine on top of the lampshade with the light off!!!(after I restyle the crown and brim) Don't want any heat on it. I usually store my surplus hats in hat boxes, just to keep them from getting dusty. All of the above tips in the other posts are good ones. Sometimes I am just too lazy to do it proper. :) Fedora

I have an old stand up rack with pegs for 6 hats. The top portion with the pegs rotates so you can pick and choose. Fedora

I'm soon planning to order a whipcracking target stand and am gonna see if the maker can put something like a 4 inch peg on top of the stand to hang my hat when I'm not using the stand. This would be where I'd store my whips and a some of my other Indygear. Do you think this might intimidate any guy friends that come over? (I have a small apartment and the only place I could display this would be in the living room.)

If only I had a gun! As heavy as those things are, you'd definitely need two to balance out the weight distribution. When I end up getting the whip stand, I'll post about it in the Whip section.

Hey gentlemen.

I'm new as a member to this forum, but have been reading it for many months. And excellent resource, props to everyone for that.

I own an Akubra Safari as well as a Federation (the newest one--only one I wear). I have had it for several months, and not a problem with taper as of yet.

However, I after a recent rain storm, I rested it on it's crown on the piano bench in my house as I normally do. Now the top of the crown that was resting on the bench (the two humps that run alongside the center dent) has two flat spots in it. I have taken to using my bedroom light chandelier as a hat rack, and no problems since then (lights off all day in my room; it's for sleeping only and the lights aren't on then anyway).
