S & W Blank Ammo

I have been shooting live rounds through my 1917, but I am interested in obtaining blank rounds. Has anybody had experience with blanks in the 1917 and can you recommend a source for the blanks.

I would talk to your local gun shop and see what they recommend. They might even be able to get them in for you.

Not to bad mouth a particular company, but Cheaper Than Dirt often is not. They market well, have a decent selection of products and are reliable and convenient, but their prices and shipping are usually not the best by a long shot.
Google is your friend, you may be able to find better prices with much better shipping for the same products.

Also, you gotta watch those type of .45 rounds that are crimped like that...I had some Snakeshot rounds just like them that I tried in my 1917, and after I touched them off...I couldn't eject the rounds from the cylinder! I finally got them loose...And what appears to have happened is that the crimped portion opened up in the forward part of the chamber, effectively wedging the shell in pretty tightly...
Those style rounds are fine in a .45 auto, where retaining the shape of the bullet is necessary for proper feeding...But apparently not in a wheelgun.

How'd you remove the stuck cases, PB? Did you tap them out with a thin screwdriver or rod?

Cheaper than dirt is a VERY Reputable establishment! I've used them for years, and you'd be hard pressed to find blanks cheaper than that price. As for the crimp style, there ain't much other way that blanks are made, unless you get some high dollar specially made (custom) rounds, even then they'll probably be crimped. Any other way will mean there is a projectile of some sort involved.

I went a head and ordered a box of blanks from cheaper than dirt and another place:
www.atlanticwallblanks.com
to see if there is any difference in the effects discussed.
I will post a reply when I get the blanks and have some time to fire them off.
Thanks for the input,
Sebastian

Yes, if i recall...I had to take a small dowel and tap them out from the front...Once I opened the cylinder...

I haven't shot blanks in quite a while, but I thought there were other types available beside the crimped ends. Are you saying that's all they make now days?

No, there's also "open ended" or "balloon" blanks as well. I'm sure movie makers use special blanks, too, but those are probably cost prohibitive.
Pic of open ended blank.

Forgot to ask. What are you using the blanks for?
You could prime up some empty cases with magnum pistol primers, like a cci 350, and get a pretty good "crack" out of them.
I wouldn't think there'd be any more ejecta than with a full blank (which are treated like live rounds in terms of safety in any event) and you could make your own for pennies.
I've made primer-powered paraffin bullet rounds for indoor shooting with revolvers before, I wouldn't think leaving the paraffin out of teh equation would change anything..

Auto rim blanks or real ammo? There's real ammo in 45 auto rim all over the place, bro
As for the parafin blanks - I've made those as well, long ago! Well it was actually glue
just used a glue gun to melt out the glue, and 'cookie cutted' it using the shell by pressing it into the glue. Just used the primer as the accelerant
They're pretty stout! I was shooting a phone book in my house and they were penetrating 1/4 t0 1/2 inch into the pages, just from the primer! (44 magnum shells).

Well, I wouldn't say it was commonplace...Which is why I was darn surprised they offered specialized blanks in it!

They have to have blanks in most popular calibers. I know Police Departments are always practicing with blanks and they typically use .45, .40, and .9 as well as others.

Sure---But I wouldn't call .45 Autorim a popular caliber, by any means...

45 Auto-Rim? Are we talking about the same cartridge here?

There are more companies making .45 Auto rim now then 15 years ago. You still will not find it at most
stores that sell ammo.
As far as using primed brass, it is normally necessary to drill out the primer hole (that which enters the caseing)
so that the primer will not back out and jam the cylinder. Make sure you mark these in some way that you
will not use the case for normal loads.
