Why many of us won't get the hat to look "right": A theory

Post by Luke Warmwater »

I was fiddling with my Penman yesterday and wondering, as always, why I can't get it to look "right." While looking it from the front, I pushed the sides (at the brim level) inward. Instantly, the hat looked "right." Stovepipe, parallel sides with the warpy swoop to the brim. The sweatband had a long, elliptical shape from front to back.

We all know that Ford's face is a long oval. Perhaps his head is also a long ellipse from forehead to occipit. This would tend to deform the hat in the manner I saw and therefore, produce the "right" look.

Short of putting my head in a vise, my oversized melon will never have such preportions. So I am going to relax and accept the way the hat looks on me.

So what say you? Discuss.

Um, any pictures?
In my experience hat never looks right on me immidiatly after i bash it. I need to wear it so it could take a form of my head and after that it looks natural. Thats why i cant get the Raiders look, and i invented my own, reversed swoop, after a while i decided to change bash to cross between TOD and KOTCS. It is two weeks since i bashed it and now i see where it is going. I thing i like it that way now.

Head shape will always affect how the hat looks when it's on. You can achieve similar results if you are a long oval but wear a round oval hat. Your head will push the hat forward, so to speak, and help create the brim swoop and straighter sides. When you turn the hat, it is doing pretty much the same thing by having your head push against the "grain" of the hat, thus distorting it a bit. But ultimately, Clark, the best thing to do is to accept how a hat looks on your own head. ;)

Luke, you are 100% right. I have done the same thing to my hats and they all have the same reaction. The only solutions I know of to achieve that look without having a long oval head is to turn the hat or to stuff the front and back of the sweatband with tissue paper to simluate a long oval headshape. I find the turn to be very effective and enough for me.

Never been a problem for me, but then I have the exact same head shape and hat size that Ford has. Seriously.

Don't hate me....

I, for one, promise that if I'm ever lucky enough to run into Mr. Ford and have an opportunity to speak with him - even if only for a moment - I'll open with
"Hey Michaelson, I just wanted to ask you- OH! ..... Oh..... sorry, I thought you were Michaelson there for a second... my bad. Well..... uh..... sorry to have bothered you."
And then just... walk away...
:D

So...
How many of you can I get on board for this Sworn Pact?
:P

Fox, I bet you $100 that if you ever meet Ford, those aren't the fist words that come out of your mouth. I will also wager that I will say that if I ever meet him. What do you say? ;)

#-o

Well, good, bad, or indifferent, that's been one of my blessings/curses that Steve has been able to use the same blocks for my hats as he does for Ford, as we have the same shaped head. That's why I rarely get into those 'brim swoop' or 'right look' discussions or debates, as it's a natural break for my head....so I'm always puzzled as to why folks work so hard to get that 'look'. :-k :Plymouth:

And THAT is why I had my Raiders blocks made a LITTLE shorter and a LITTLE wider back then when I started :- :Plymouth:

Well, CLEARLY the NEXT step is obvious enough:
Simply meet Harrison Ford and we'll all find out what's what.
Let's all get right on that.

I have definitely got to figure out what my head shape is (if it's easy to determine, don't make too much fun of me as I just don't know :- ).

I know I've got a short, round face. Just like Ford's, right?

Right? :[

One reason why I don't post very many photos on the internet. I'm not a member of facebook, but the internet is the internet:
