The brim curl looks correct to me. I think what you seek is produced by having the hat turned before creasing the hat.

Actually, you may not need to turn it. That only helps for some people, anyway. What I see is a brim that's a little too flat all around.
Get a good screen shot or two in front of you. Then, using cool distilled water (in a sprayer or just on your hands) dampen the underside of the brim in the areas you'd like to modify. Then, start working it with your hands until you get the results your looking for, or at least close. That's my method, and it works well with most felts.

Yep. The only "natural" ways to get that exact look is either with the turn, as Oak said (effect will vary with individual head shape) or if you have a long oval head with a round oval hat. Thus, you must be wearing it to see the effect (if it's even there).
Also, a stiff felt will resist doing that more, even with a severe turn. However, as the hat gets used it will soften up and gain character. Do you know if the hat already has the turn? If it does, then time and patience will help.

Looking at the photos I would say it didn't get turned before the crease was put in. The ribbon is the big tip off to that.

aww i should have had peters bros do it or asked if they couldve. thx guys i guess it will be a hat from the later scenes when it doesnt have the turn.
so when i ever get a new one just ask if they can turn it???

Yeah, don't be shy about asking for the turn "by name" (so to speak) indyfan1234.
When I ordered my Magnoli Herbert Johnson I laid out what I wanted in plain language (I was, after all VERY new to the terminology) ...but thankfully, I had the gift of long-windedness!
I'm not even sure if I fully understood WHAT "The Turn" WAS... just that from reading many, many posts I'd read again & again that many people had recommended getting it.
So, I gave Indy Magnoli my measurements to pass along to Steve and then simply wrote:
"I won't insult anybody by listing brim and taper and crown dimensions, you both know them all too well... I'll just leave it at this:
I'm looking for the Classic Raiders Style. I'll be honest, as a newbie to the discussions on this subject, I STILL don't think I've figured out all the subtle nuances that separate the "Idol Grab", the "Raven Bar" and the "Cairo Street Scene"... I guess I just know what I like... but if I had to specify, I'd say "Cairo Street Scene"... even MORE specifically, the hat Indy's wearing when he's "Drinking with a monkey".
As for "the turn"? Yes, please... a little turn never hurt anyone, right?
I assume you send the hat un-bashed, but I'm not 100% certain... If there's a choice, I'd ask that I'd be able to pull the hat out of the box ready to go... If the last person to ever tweak the bash and pinch of this hat is Steve I'd be one happy camper... But as I said, if that's not the case, well... tell Steve I'll try to make him proud."
Point being that when the hat DID show up it looked JUST like what I'd pictured in my amateur brain EXCEPT...
*GASP* (I didn't REALLY gasp)
The hat had a kind of "askew-ness" about it...
Looking at it from overhead it seemed as though the brim was twisted a little to far one way and not "lined-up" with the little bow inside the hat and the front pinch on the crown.
But I figured "Well, surely these guys know what they're doing", dropped the hat straight onto my noggin and gently pulled it down a bit more snug... that's when I realized that doing this made the hat look slightly off-center on my head. So, I gave it a little twist to the side and sure enough: There - thanks to the Turning of the hat - was the familiar Swoop I loved so much in Raiders!
Cheers,
Mitch

the degree of the turn will dictate the degree of the warp on the brim........which is also dependent on your headshape. with these 3 variables in hand, it would be difficult for a hatter to get that exact warp that you are looking for.......if you need this warp on the brim, i suggest that your next hat be open crowned and put the turn in yourself and bash it as so.

That's good advice from G.
It's worth noting that I got REALLY lucky... my hat was in the hands of a Master.

I agree, Mitch is my official model.
I also agree if you want a real good swoop you must crease the hat your self. I could only guess so much and that what it would be a guess on how much to turn the hat. The best to do is to just put the hat on ( open crown) and pull by the brim until you see the hat look like Mitch's posted above. Them put in a slight center crease. take the hat off. then get the front and back of the center crease to where it should be. by most offerings that you will get here the front should be around 4 3/4 and the back 4 1/4. then put in the front pinch slightly ( as to adjust if needed. Then start putting in the sides. I start with the non bow side first and then go to the other side. using screen grabs will help a great deal. Onuce you get the hat the way you want then start putting in those crease tighter.

I thought the turn went into the Magnoli HJ's by default (as it is Steve's blocks) or am I mistaken?

Well, thanks very much fellas!
Your comments had me laughing (kinda' "barked" ut a laugh when I read what
you wrote, Oak!)
Point being, just a moment ago my lovely bride popped into my office to see what I found so funny and when she read what you boys wrote I got a nice kiss on the neck out of it! (I know, I know... "careful, it's a family show")
Still... thanks for the assist, guys!
Gee, and Valentine's comin' around the corner, too... I guess love is in the air even here at Club Obi Wan!
(So take a break from that "No time for love" business, Shorty!)

the turn is not a function of the block, but how you bash it. magnoli's own HJ is unturned. turning a hat will take an even snap brim and put a warp in it....it will move the bow closer to the center of your head. if that is where you want the hat to sit, bash the pinch there and viola...the hat is turned. over time, the pressure you feel from the hat pushing it's oval shape on an oblique plane to the shape of your head will diminish....and will eventually conform to it.....but the swoop/warp will be in place permanently.

Ah, okay. Forgive me; just jitters about the MHJ I ordered a while back. I'm still relatively new to this...

Steve, if he bashes a hat he turns it first unless the customer ask for it not to be turned.

Heh, glad I kept my mouth shut when I place the order, then...
