Just how sqaure can a block be?

Post by Magno »

I'm making a new, all-purpose dream hat block for myself, and I've got a bit of a problem involving the dome at the top of the block.

I'm REALLY into square crowns (like the hat on the ROTLA movie poster), so to start of I made a block with a square top and sanded down the edge to a rounded finish.
Obviously this needed to be done because if there's an actual corner on the top of the block, it just won't work.

My question though is regarding this - although I've sculpted the edges around the top to be round, there's still a big flat spot on the very top of the block.

So...just how square how can I make it? I'd like to go as square as possible without ruining the look.
From what I can gather, a flat topped block would make a center crease a bit more difficult to accomplish, correct?

I can post a picture tomorrow if it will help.

IMO you need to sand the top until you have a medium dome. No flat spots. Fedora

I agree. I made a few that had a smallish flat spot in it....it made an "alright hat" but nothing close to a ROFTA hat. It pulled the sides in on my attempts.

I figured that I had enough height on the block....so I tried it...didnt do what I wanted so I then I worked a dome into it.
