Just got my block from Ohio Jones.....and some seasoning salt to enjoy some snacks while i'm waiting for the hat body to dry
(thanks buddy
).
here's the only pic that i'm gonna show of her:
let me tell you....ohio's craftsmenship on this thing is TOP SHELF. i am floored by his woodworking skills.....considering that this is only his 3rd or 4th block that he's made (probably not even). kudos ohio.....especially when more 'seasoned' block makers charge a lot more and give you alot less imo.
there is no way to produce a bad hat out of this knowing what i know of the blocks i have seen and used. i'm excited to throw a felt body on her now. i can gaurantee that the shape will be better than my old 360 stovepipe, and it won't be like my garbage tapered hats from my lamode block.....i truly believe that this one is going to be IT.
thanks ohio, you are the man

G,
I am so HAPPY you like it!!!!!!!! I had to do something different with the bottom to dress it up. At first I didn't think you would even look at the bottom.
The seasoning...is made by yours truly! That right now is part of my retirement plans. I have years to make it work.
I can not wait to see what comes off of that block.

ha ha! i didn't know you made the seasoning too! now i don't know what to do first......make a hat or marinate a steak for supper
i'm going to wait for one more day for my pecan hat body to show up....if it's not here by tomorrow, then i'll put a dark brown body on her

That looks wonderful. I think you have taken the "straight sided" theory a little too far on that one side, though.
Oh wait! How about this one? Not bad, but the degree of arc along the 2:00 o'clock position needs to transition sooner into the top. You'll notice in the following screen grab that when Indy is running from the boulder the hat.........
Stop it surveyor! Stop it!
O.K I'll get back in line.
Ohio, I have found it is a large task recreating multiple sizes. You are certainly very talented. I can surely appreciate both of ya'lls efforts.
Looking forward to the result.

LLS,
I will definitely agree with you there. I do believe you have to be able to visualize what you want and have a little sculptor in you. I will say my festool rotex sander is to me what a hammer and a chisel is to a sculptor. When you can get a rotex type sander...it just lends itself to "melting" the material off.
It helps to with reference points on the block. I use tape and punch marks. That is what those tiny holes are in the top of the block G. I found this works great because even if you sand over them...they are still there
Thanks for the help and the kind words LLS.....and if you need any blocks...........

Thanks....I just got that wood burning system a few weeks ago and was dying to try it out. Indy G's block was the first to be burned!

Nail on the head there, Ohio. The minds eye.

Lookin' good Indian G!!
I see what you see. ;-) . You got the back looking better. Now, go look at the back of the hat and look at Indy's hat as he leaves the Ravenbar as Marion jabs "See ya tomorrow,
Indiana Jones." You know the scene I mean? ;-)

It is difficult to see, but I really like the bow work on that hat, G. In my opinion, I think you lowered the block just a bit too much on the back. It could be the crease, but seeig as though there is no visible taper, I think its the block. The arc of the hat seems a bit off. I'm not trying to jab at you here, just trying to help. I think its a beautiful hat and one that I would definately wear if you passed it on to me, wink, wink. Just my two cents.

The felt looks very very nice. The shape too although I would definitely enjoy seeing more pictures! After such a long wait you give us only 4? You must be crazy!

G, I think the collage on this thread,
viewtopic.php?t=25220&highlight=avatar , may be useful. And I agree iwth you, Erri, that felt looks great. The type you want to run your hands over for a couple minutes.

G, I especially like the front view, but I too believe that the back is a bit too low.
very very nice hat, anyway. too bad for the bad lightening, I can't see the ribbon well

thanks for the comments folks. as far as the back being too low, check out this pic of THE hat:
how many ribbon widths does it take to get to the top of that rear crease?......i betcha its less than how many licks it takes to get to the centre of a tootsie roll lollipop ;-)
i find it kinda funny that you folks are interested in the felt and bow work
......the felt is a western hat body rabbit (staple body) and the bow work is not bad i guess. the hat body is quite thick and is difficult to bash defined lines unless you put some elbow grease into it. i'll get a better pic of the bow.
btw......the felt is nice, but is nothing compared to the smoothness of an AB or fed 4 deluxe for that matter. just goes to show.......don't trust pictures too much
(sigh......i wish they could learn that over in the leather jacket section
)

I am inclined to say about the back being too low too, even considering the famous table hat but I will not say anything before I get more pictures. More please !
Don't let the comments put you down G, I think you're doing a great job, we're just greedy of pictures when it's about a new brand
Also can we see the open crown or is it secret?

Don't let my comments put you down, G. I meant only to give some constructive criticism. That is a fine looking hat. Even considering the photo you posted, though, I still think its a little low. I could be wrong; I'm not Steve. Just trying to lend a hand here.

That is the only time we see the hat with the back creased that low. Is there any other time when it's that low?

My thought exactly, I don't think we see it that low in any other scene plus we don't even know how THAT hat looks from the front. Just a consideration on the picture in general, nothing to do with the beautiful hat in question

here is a good side profile of my hat for more comparisons. i don't think it's that low, but perhaps i've been looking at this thing too much
i have seen some SOC pics where the back is low as well.....i believe even LLS mentioned it at one time.....LLS?
keep the criticisms coming.......if it weren't for your comments, i'd still be wearing a raiders bashed top hat

Man,
That hat has a great arc from front to back. I think it is spot on that pic of the hat on the table. Profile looks like the shot of Ford waiting to shoot the dudes in the truck full of T-N-T in Cairo.
I like it dude. I may have you make a hat for me to give to my dad for his birthday so I can say I have an Indy G original. I would love one to...but alas I made the block for your head...not my monster melon!!!!!..LOL
Keep it up dude..

I don't think the back is too low, -I think the front is accidentaly too high. In the first pic, the head on shot, which looks great, the top dent is popped up just behind the peak, and it looks like it's that way in the the side view. I'd soak the area of the peak, set the pinches there and let it dry. If your head still pushes it up, sand the crown thin enough so the only felt that gets pushed up is where your head touches. Still, the front looks like it might be a little too tall, The Raiders is about 3 ribbon widths tall, 4 1/2 inches. You could bash it deeper, or transition some crown into brim in front. ... Nice looking block! I think the shape of the oval is unusual - kind of football shape. The only hat I have with a similar oval shape is an old HJ. ;-)

$3K, i knew you had a keen eye my friend
the felt i'm using is a western rabbit.....very thick and sometimes stubborn
that area that you mentioned is a place that i've been working in slowly and daily. and i agree with you too, that the hat is just a hair too tall in the front....but fortunately, she fits my face well
LLS....thanks for always sharing your knowledge. it has made this project extremely exciting for me......that part, and also knowing that ohio was behind a grinder somewhere sweating bullets cuz he didn't want to grind too much off

A pic is worth a Thousand ...........debates?
What an arc on the top of the hat, the SOC hat. I am wondering if the 360 block will yeild this arc? Anybody know? I have never used a 360 stovepipe with a flat crown, and that is new territory for me. Fedora

a 360 flat top will not yield an arc so much as a 'slope'. it takes some very careful bashing to get it nice and that bashing pulls the crown shape away from the 360. another thing is that the crease can't go as deep as a domed top.....AND unfortunately, it will produce some unsightly angularities at the rear of the hat where you want a nice rounding to occur. i've seen $3K take it to the limit as well as in some of the hats i produced. i had to scrap that block because i wanted the nice arc as well as nice humps
