Hat Head.. I Can't Escape the Malady!

It seems no matter how I wear my hat that old nasty hat hair comes along with it. Making it embarassing to take my hat off in public.

Here's how I wear my hair.

Any suggestions to avoid the dreaded curse?

Hey Randy: Be happy at least you've got hair to flatten!

Some of us really need these lids for insulation in lieu of follicles.
Funny thing I've realized of late is I subconsciously see my hat as a hair substitute :[ , It's perfect, feel like brown hair? Grab the AB, Feel like blonde? Grab the Akubra Tawny fawn and finally, feel like Auburn? Grab the Cavanaugh!

So, even though I wouldn't mind a head of hair when it's -40 up here, lids do a pretty good job as an alternative. :-k

but in the meantime, enjoy the problem eh!

Cheers

If you use some sort of volumizing/styling product in your hair, just get your hands wet and run them through the roots of hair, roughing it up to reactivate the volumizing product and add body to your hair. Don't put your hat back on when your hair is wet or damp, though.

I think i'm the only one that likes hat head. I have gravity defying, unruly curly hair. When i wear a hat for a while and get hat head, it manages to subdue the unruliness and give my hair a much more relaxed wavy flatness (for a while). After taking off the lid I just run my hand through my hair and it looks better than it does with any hair product.

bingo! you won't believe how great this world is......no need to 'do' your hair, no more blowdryer, fancy shampoos and hair products.....no more hat head, helmet head......NOTHING!

i think it's great. i've been shaving down to like a number 2 clipper for a year now. if you wear a fed daily like i do.....its the 'do' to 'do' :)

I part my hair on the side (think Connery Bond or Stephen Colbert) and the low-volume of that styling helps keep hat hair less noticeable when I do take off my lid. I do get a flat spot on the back of my head from the center dent, but the rest of my hair is usually not too bad.

Maybe find a different way to style your hair for when you're wearing a hat?

You and I suffer from the same problem. I suggested a comb, though I don't carry one. I find that I look rather better with hat hair becuase it does straighten my hair. Ruffle it up a bit after taking the hat off the hat, comb it with your fingers, and you have a look that even a proper barber can't touch.

Dude- I know you'd like to get a real, workable answer for this, but there just isn't one. Even with short hair around the sides and back, when you take off the hat you have a hat ring. It's the price you pay for style!
I wear all sorts of fedoras, short, tall, it doesn't matter, they all mess up your hair. Just ruffle it when you take your hat off, it'll be fine and don't worry about it. Likely you'll have your hat in hand and people will know why you have hat hair.

Well, I should be more specific. My hair gets a weird looking part and high flat spot in front. I also rarely wear any styling products, the only time I do is when leaving from getting a haircut and they insist on pouring on the noxious concoctions that take a week to wash out.

When I get my hair cut, I feel almost as vain as Sinatra. I always tell whoever cuts it I wear a hat and need my hair to stay a certain lenght to keep it fitting my head. Or else they buzz and I can't wear a hat for weeks :x

I get the Ford comments quite often actually. Funny, when my hair's shaggy I can do Han Solo, when it's shorter, Indy. 8)

Randy

p.s. maybe I should try the wetting a comb fix. :-k

There's no solution. Short of not having hair, or having really long pony-tail type hair that you pull back, there's no fix. You can try some of what was mentioned above, but short of rewashing/soaking your head again, there's nothing your going to do...no styling product, no brush, no comb is going to fix it. Sorry.

I'm gonna have to go with Indyblues and Indiana G on this one. Shave the head or quit complaining and wear your hat head with pride and be thankful you can GET a hat head! :)

I've got to agree with Maboot38, just be glad you have hair! Ah, I can remember those days (long ago.) Hat hair was a problem, but hats are so cool I really didn't care. Now, hats are what keep my dome warm. You cold be like a friend of mine who went bald at a very early age. He too wore a hat and I don't EVER remember seeing him take it off, not for any reason. That's one way to deal with it, but not very polite. I never found a solution to it.
Best,
KY

I think I caught whatever you had from your hat, because I let my hair grow out just a little bit for a few weeks, and gray ones were popping up.

Well my liner droped off last week, no time to fix it, and now i wear my hat without it. I notice that without that silk thing hair slyle is safe under the lid. Dunno how and why it works, but recently i ve been embarassed to take off a hat, because of my hair being messed up under it. Now it sure feels better. Hat hear is less active without silk lineing.

Gray hair? Gosh, i cant wait to get mine. I mean seriously, it looks sooo SA. :)

I used to wear my hair longer. But I started wearing very VERY short once I bought my first fedora in order to prevent "hat hair".

I agree with Blues. Shave your hair really short and you won't have hat hair, otherwise you're screwed. Own up to it. Such is life.

One way men used to deal with the problem was that the hats fit their heads - they were not wedged on as a lot pf people wear hats today. There was a bit of room for the head so it didn't pinch tight to the head. I know that people want hats to fit snug - but that was not the "norm" in the heyday of hat wearing.

Another way to beat the hathead issue is to use the old fashioned way of styling ----lots of greasy bryl cream - though that really wrecks liners.

And of course getting a "high and tight" will also reduce the hathead effect

Hey, I was just thinking, if hair products and bryll creme damage the hat band, could you style your hair with Pecards? You could kill 2 birds with one stone. Styled hair AND a durable hat band!

been there, kinda disappointing....with a name like that you expect you'd get like a hamburger and fry's or a at least a steak or something rugged and like a model-T or like Harrison Ford....but nay, it's all very hollywood diet fancy : (

I always wondered if HF ever even ate there?

I just thought someone knew something I didn't about keeping our doos pristine under our lids. :[

I've gotten quite a few Ford comparisons from friends in the past. Usually you don't think you look like someone people say you do, but I can see similarities between us. :)

Maybe I need to contact Lucas and Spielberg to see if they need a younger "flashback" Indy in V?

I must say that when I wear my fedora compared to wearing a baseball cap that the "hathead" issue is not a problem for me. Can you tell that I had a hat on my head when I take the fedora off? Sure, but it it is easily fixable with my hands. The ball cap is a different story. After wearing it for any amount of time my hair is "matted" to my scalp and you can see a very distinctive ring from the sweat band.

That's what my fedoras do to my hair. it's flat and looks like a helmet or bad wig. :[

The hair syndrome comes with the hat. A comb or just running your fingers through it will alleviate much of the problem. Or short hair. You have a healthy head of hair. But figure, in the past, when virtually all men wore hats, their hair was shorter and generally controlled by a grooming cream.

There's plenty of hair products now that are not greasy and will go a long way in maintaining your hair style.

And keep in mind, when Harrison Ford is playing Indy he's surrounded by people who are there to make sure he looks good with or without hat.

If you watch Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, whenever the actors removed their hats, they had the flat hair. Sam Peckinpah didn't care - the hair came with the story.

Good luck.

well, to be fair....Ford's hair was so short for Indy that it didn't really need fixing that much....

This is my hair dead on. My dad had insanely curly hair, my mother had wavy hair, and they both had it thick, so my hair is both and its a nightmare. So i comb it, stick the lid on and when i take off the head i just run my hand through it and thats it. it will actually look just as good if i had run a comb through it. I don't wear product or grease or pomade or whatever they call it now it makes my head itch terribly.

So does anyone feel that River Phoenix's hair in LC was SA? I know that long top, short sides and back were in....but RP's hair in LC was REALLY long. I thought that SPF's hair in young Indy was more SA...at least for 3/4 of the series...towards the end it was rather long also....

but I could be wrong. Just wondering if any of you guru's out there know.
