i just found this hat in a pawn shop...here's one just like it i found online...but it doesn't say what its made of.

here's the link:

(Mod edit: Ebay listing removed as per site rules: viewtopic.php?t=9524)

is there anyone here that has this hat, or knows about it and can tell me what its made out of. it doesn't say anywhere on the hat band. the one i have by the look of it has been worn quite a bit, yet is still very stiff.

thanks

Can't help much, but I do recall that years ago you could get some of the gear that you would see in Marlboro ads by mail-order - hat, gloves, vest, shirt, etc., as well as enameled tin mugs, plates, coffee pot and such. The hat is bashed as seen in those ads.

lazarus, it's really hard to tell without seeing pictures of the actual hat. While your original link (removed because it was an eBay link to someone else's auction) showed a similar hat, the same hat shape and style can be made from most any type of felt. Also keep in mind that cowboy style hats like that are always stiff, and designed to be that way, so depending how much shellack was put in the stiffener, trying to soften the felt could be very difficult at best and sometimes you can risk damaging the hat in the process. That said, if there is no indication of the felt on the inside of the hat, it's most likely not beaver. Better chances are that it's a rabbit felt.
