Howdy,

Just received a Wested OTR Special ROLA in soft goat. I like it, but I have some reservations. Opinions are welcome.

First the fit: (just roll with the dark & blurry pics, sorry):



Next some more pics followed by observations and questions:



1. The jacket does smell . . . like leather. I like it; so does my wife & she's not a leather person.
2. The color is lighter than I envisioned, and the jacket is MUCH less shiny than a used Wested goat I owned. The jacket is lighter in color and less shiny than is evident in the pics. It's kinda what I thought washed goat would look like.
3. The jacket is rather easily scuffed, but without real damage to the leather.
4. There are dark streaks on each sleeve and on the back. They appear to be where the jacket had been folded, but I'm not sure. Will this go away or is it a long-term problem? (BTW the jacket color in reality is closest to the first pic below):

those dark streaks appear to be the spine marks of the goat. see the TOD thread where peter got in his shipment of washed goat and found these marks on them. from what i heard on that post, i thought these hides were not going to be used.

I can only comment on the fit; it fits you FAR better than my recent washed goat ROLA. The fit looks great.

That's the thing, Indy G, the jacket is not supposed to be washed goat, but it sure looks like it, judging from other pics posted.

Send it back or not?

Talk to Peter first. It does look like washed goat though.
And they do look like those 'spine' marks from another thread...

Those "grill" marks are indeed part of the leather.....if it really bothers you, send it back.

The imperfections or "grill" marks don't bother me so much. But I really think this is a washed goat instead of the standard soft goat. It sure looks like a matte finish compared to the used Wested goat I previously owned. I've emailed & PMd Peter to ask him to take a look.

I actually don't mind those dark marks. It's an Indy jacket after all.

I'd send it back...That big streak down the back does not look good!
Personally, since these are cut to the 80's fit I'd go up one size if I were you. It looks good, but if you want it to fit you like Indy's jacket did in raiders, it could stand to be a bit baggier.

I agree. That's why I suggested to Peter in the ToD thread that he ask if anyone who intended to distress their jacket anyway would accept that hide.

Raider Z, you have to be happy with the jacket, you've done the right thing asking Peter.

that doesn't look like soft goat. i think holt's super raiders is soft goat and i can see the sheen on his. yours looks just like my washed goat that i had.....cut, pocket size, scalloping on the flaps, long straps, long length, even the way the storm flap is folded at the collar.......looks identical to what i had.

wested puts out a great jacket for the price that you pay.....but these mistakes have really got to stop imo. thats a significant amount of fundage that these couriers are getting from us

Agreed, but the Wested website says you'll be refunded postage if they've made a mistake. A jacket delivered made in the wrong hide is certainly an error. If you sent it back, I don't doubt Wested would happily refund your postage and send you the correct jacket.

rigth! this happend to 2 of my jacket,I had to pay a large amount of cash to get it out of customs and when I opend the bag I realized I had to send it back,meaning shipping back costs. when that was done and gone I ordered another jacket.but guess what? same thing happend all over again. I m not rich! send out the right jackets in the first place,I mean,how hard is it?! ( sorry my mood is not so good today)

thats washed goatskin.not soft goat. and thats why I will never get the washed goat.its to dull and its scuffed to easily,how do you think it will look in 6 years


what size is it.and whats the back length.the good thing I see,is that details are very good though..I like the cut and details it has..

It's a 42, Holt, and the back is 26". Since it is going back anyway, I'm thinking about getting a 44 so I can do the shower treatment thing. Opinions?

I think I would probably go up a size. It looks like the 42 fits pretty well, but if you go up and then do a hot water treatment, I think you'd get the right amount of "baggy" that the Raider jacket has. There might have been a couple of "tight" jackets, but most of them look to be actually more loose on Ford.

yes I would go up a size too.

And tell Wested to send you what you ordered - that's washed goat you got. I prefer the washed goat but also like to get what I paid for.

As far as the size it looks good on you from the small photos. More important is how you feel because you are the one who will be wearing it in the real world, so that's what counts.

For what I can tell, the jacket suits you really well!

About the darker "stain", well, I have no idea..

BTW, this jacket does one heckuva flying squirrel, though with the 80s cut, it looks more like an old-fashioned diamond-shaped kite.

Okay I really feel like a newbie for asking this; but what is all this with flying squirrels?

Well, personally, I'll never accept a squirrely jacket again. Send it back.
I'm hoping to talk to Tony Nowak soon, and construct a jacket that both looks good and is practical for everyday use.

I think it's a shame for wested sending out such a jacket with grill marks.
They should inform the customer first or should sell the jacket much cheaper then they standard stuff.

It's probably an Indian-made jacket....less QC on those jackets I assume.

Blemishes, scars and stains in the leather are not considered defects. They only enhance the beauty of the leather, its nature's way of telling you its a real leather jacket with a story;).

Thats also on tags wested puts in their jackets.

I understand. I'm not a nitpicker about blemishes, etc. However, these are REALLY noticeable and do not look natural. Anyhow, this was Peter's reply:

The dark streaks are the backbone marks of the goat which show through dark and was made before the marks were spotted. The skin is washed goat not standard goat where the pigmenting would have covered the problem.

Therefore, Peter obviously consideres this beyond the realm of blemish and into the realm of defect. He has sent his apologies will graciously replace the jacket or give me credit. Thanks Peter!

plus, you didn't order WASHED goat... You ordered soft goat. So defect or not, it isn't what you ordered.
