Can you change your mind about "The Turn"?

Post by Bartram »

So, I'm about to get my first real Indy hat (Fed IV Dlx) and I'm torn regarding "the Turn".

Is it the kind of thing that you can do to a hat (like the Fed) and then effectively undo if you change your mind? I'm just not sure how I will want to wear the hat so I'm wary about committing to "the Turn" (especially if I want to wear it as a dress hat).

Anybody got advise out there on this especially with a Fed Dlx? Can the turn be "undone"?

The turn can be undone but you will need a reblock to get the tight front out. That goes with any crease job that is put in like the Raiders hat.

Howdy,

I recently purchased a Fed IV Deluxe. I'm very pleased with the hat, but I found it too stiff and heavy for the turn to work well, at least on my head. I decided get a softer hat for a Raiders look (ordered from JPD). On the Fed I did a psuedo-LC bash instead, which I am very pleased with. And, as you mentioned, it is much easier to pull a dressy look with the LC bash as compared to the Raiders bash. I'll go to church in the Fed; I'll go exploring in the JPD. Just my opinion; plenty of folks have turned their Feds with great results.

At any rate, wait til you get the hat before you make up your mind.

When I first got my Penman I creased it with the turn. After a couple of weeks I decided to strighten the hat out and wear it without the turn. I hadn't put a very tight crease in so it worked out fine. A few months ago, though, I decided to turn it, as the brim and crown had softened enough to give me what I wanted out of it so I turned the hat again. With a bit of water I was able to get most of the tight crease out and you really can't tell its there unless you run your finger next to the crease I have set in. I've also worn my hat turned with a tan suit and it looks great.

The turn can look quite dressy, I slightly turned my grey Christy´s which is bashed in the LC style and I´m very pleased with the brim swoosh I get. In fact it is the dressiest hat I own.
