I'm very pleased with this new whip, and I'm very excited to break it in and get it doing all those fancy tricks I've learned. The color is just *gorgeous* and I wish it would stay this color forever (crack in the shade? lol). This is the color I wish I'd always had, and now I finally have it!

Care to guess the maker? Borton can't guess because I know he knows.. ;-)









The maker also sent with it some scrap pieces of the roohide he used to make it. It's very interesting to see the thickness of the leather, and also be able to see and feel the unbraided hide. Very interesting!!

Now I'm just waiting for oooone more...

It *is* a Bernardo. I just took it out for a half hour or so and started putting it through its paces, doing some slow figure eights and quiet overheads, and I'm shocked at the difference between a 4 year old whip (my Stenhouse) and a brand new one. Of course everybody knows how different they are, but it's surprisingly difficult to switch back and forth between a noodle and a pole.

Maybe some day in the future I'll be able to coil this monster - but until then I'm going to keep working it in and training it to be a good DeLongis style whip.

I'll be able to post a thorough review maybe in a week or so, but out of the box and after an hour or two, I think Bernardo makes a fantastic whip, and I couldn't recommend him more. The whip is gorgeous, gives me crisp cracks, looks and feels sturdy, and did I mention how awesome it looks? And good thing I didn't have to provide measurements for the whip, or I would have gotten those wrong.

It is a thing of beauty isn't it? Looking at a well-made whip is like looking at a *real* katana; it's just got layers upon layers of details of beauty! It's great!

I know you’ve been waiting awhile for your Del Carpio bullwhip, glad to hear it arrived. It looks great too! This is the first one I’ve seen since Bernardo returned back to Peru; It looks like he out did himself once again. Look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on it, in the mean time have fun!

He actually told me that he re-made most of the whip because he finished it and wasn't happy with how it turned out. How's that for dedication to one's craft?

That looks like a work of art. Congratulations! I'm very very happy with my Bernardo I got a couple of months ago - a saddle tan with brandy knots.

Bernardos whips are some of the EASIEST to break in. The two I've had were pretty much 'noodles' like you say, within two sessions. His braiding isn't loose by any means, the whips just aren't stiff for any time at all. Nothing like the rock solid, machine-like braiding of a Strain. Now THOSE take some time to break in. I don't think its physically possible to braid tighter than Strain can.

I've been thinking about who I should get my next whip from. I've been thinking about Bernardo and Strain. I though I was set on Strain but now I'm not sure!

Dave - I've tried a few Strains before, and really between the two you can't go wrong. It IS a tough choice! And they're priced almost exactly the same! I don't know why they make it so tough to choose.

Go with a Strain! He's the Jedi Master! Although Bernardo makes a good whip, you'll have your Strain in about 4 weeks! And he really is the Pinnacle in the whip world (IMO,,and others, I'm sure) You'll be waiting for a Bernardo, for,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,(tick,tock,tick,tock)

But if you don't mind waiting.....a long time....get a Bernardo, his whips are really super nice, and impeccable attention to screen details- but you just can't compare them to a Strain- two different levels altogether!

Just to be clear, Joe's current wait time is 6-8 weeks. And I'm sure Bernardo's wait wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't been busy moving back to Peru from the States and having to get all set up again and back to work.

Remember, the dude is a SEASONED veteran as far as whipmaking goes. The two I ordered from Bernardo took a very long time, and it was not because of a move of any kind, and his emails weren't the friendliest when I inquired about it. The wait times have been mentioned by other on here, too. Like I said, I don't want to bash Bernardo at all, he's a great whipmaker and I still have one of his whips. I'm just stating some facts is all, my friend. Some people don't mind waiting super long times for items, whether it be hats, jackets, whatever. 6-8 weeks is a limit for me.

Congrats on the B whip Shane,that looks fabulous! Perfect look,and certainly will improve with age. Unfortunately,I've had to put my Bernardo ambitions in the back burner for now. I recently got a Karaka synthetic whip,which is perfect for snowy practice for you Canadians.
Maybe I can try your Bernardo out the "next" time I'm out your way Shane. I'm planning on it!

Well you aren't the friendliest guy around either. You tend to go on a bashing flow and don't stop to consider circumstance.

You came at me with a hot poker over the whip artist whip holder before even asking if I had permission to make them...which I was given a long time ago.

If you dish it out, don't expect not to get it back.

I've had many many nice conversations with Bernardo over the years ,and unless its a different fella, i don't know who you are talking about.

I think Joe is outstanding, and I'd love to one day have a whip of his, but I deliberately chose Bernardo over Joe for the two bullwhips I got last year because I feel Bernardo is closest to the original Morgan style. I got the first whip from Bernardo, and liked it so much that several months later I ordered another. Del Carpio whips are perfectly Morganesqe imo. I could easily have chosen Joe Strain whips, but went with Bernardo instead. Bernardo's whips don't become broken in too quickly.

Regarding Bernardo's personality, each email I recieved from him was also very nice, and even when I started to get impatient, he kept me updated and aware of what was going on with my whip. I would gladly deal with him again, if this whip wasn't perfect. ;-)

JMObi - glad to hear you like them too, and I also chose the Bernardo because of the resemblence to the old Morgans.

In fact, I recently compared my whip to the Raiders whip on the main page with Sergei's measurements and mine is almost exactly the same!!! There are a few small differences here and there, but the strand width is the same, handle width, ring knot width, and all sorts of stuff! I think the Turk's head was just a little less wide, and my wristloop is a little longer. But I was definitely impressed!

Who me? Not the friendliest? Problem is, you've never met me in person- it's the cyber barrier that makes me seem unfriendly ;-) same thing that makes you young whipper snappers think you can talk smack to adults ;-). TR your comments may have come off as a little bashing and cynical, though I am sure you didn’t mean them too. Maybe that’s just your wording or how your online personality comes across, what ever it is you are entitled to your opinion and that’s fine. You don’t necessarily have to sugar coat things, but a bit of tact goes along way. If you felt Bernardo was impolite to you in his private conversations, then you should try to resolve that privately; as it might have just been the cyber barrier.

Mola Ram, regardless of your feelings towards TR, please do not bring up past personal issues here on this forum, it’s unprofessional, unneeded and personally I doubt any of us really want to hear it. You don’t have to like everyone here, but this forum is not set up to supply members a place to bicker and flame, If you have an issue with another member take it up privately or go elsewhere, either way leave it off this public forum.

Facts are, if you want a traditional Indy style bullwhip made as close as possible to the whips David Morgan used to make, you order it from Bernardo. That’s the way Bernardo makes them and they top quality whips. Even David Morgan sends customers to Bernardo when they ask for those requirements. When you order a Joe Strain Indy whip, it is true your getting a whip made by one of the best whipmakers around today, but your also getting a Joe Strain bullwhip. As close as they are to the original Indy whips, they still look, feel and handle like a Joe Strain whip, not that thats a bad thing at all, but its not what everyone wants. I happen to have a great deal of respect for both whip makers and their product and bottom line, both are premier Indy whip makers.

Now since this thread is about Shane’s new Del Carpio bullwhip,and not about who’s better then who, or who is friendly or who is not, Keep the conversation on track.

So yesterday I went up to see Anthony De Longis and spent some time working on whip stuff (and I ended up throwing tomahawks and battle axes with Liontamer while Dejah Thoris laughed at the sudden boost in testosterone).

I had Anthony take a look at the new Bernardo and he really liked it! After his first crack with it he said to himself, "Oh, very nice.." and he told me he thought it had a very good feel to it, and he liked it a lot. He also said to give my compliments to Bernardo (which I have), and later he asked if he could use it again!

So after using it for a while yesterday (though I spent more time with his shorter, 13"-long-handled Jacka whips), I'm absolutely pleased with it, and I'm so glad it's finally here and breaking in nicely.

Also interesting to note was that he handed me a chainmail whip like the kind Adam Winrich used on Time Warp and had me try that out. It was surreal! The whip is very short, and very heavy, and if you're not careful you'll lose your connection with the whip and it'll fall limp. Very different than the kangaroo whips!

Just curious, what did you think of the 13" Jacka whip? I am thinking of getting one later on after my indy 4 jacka order has been filled. And also how long was it? Super congratulations on the Bernardo! I so hope to have one of those one day!

Ah! Well... the longer handles give you a lot more leverage with the whip, and they're very nice for targeting too. They're also nice to use when you're used to short handled whips, because it tests your form and your ability to transfer whatever you know to a different style of whip.

Sometimes they're difficult to get used to, but they're very very(!) nice for multiple cracks and combinations, and they're a nice change of pace - especially the 5-6 foot whips.

Shane, I'm glad you had a good time out at the ranch. I'm still waiting for my call telling me about all the fun you had.

I have to say that I've used the chainmail whip that Shane mentioned. It really is a trip to try. I was definately something that I wouldn't want to crack on a regular basis, but the experience was fun enough.

It's breaking in nicely, but it's still a little stiff (understandably). Though the coils are a little smaller now, so that's good. Bernardo makes one FINE bullwhip!
