Hi there, fellow whipcrackers

I found a web site the other day. It has mostly kind of cowboy type bullwhips ‘n stuff like that. The whips are cool. Not the Indy style.

But… they have something called “the adventurewhip??”.
Can anyone help me with that?
Is it any good? I’m short on budget (who’s not. ), but I’m really looking for a good whip.

I read about the budget whips here - cool stuff, by the way - and I’ve seen some fantastic roohide whips. (out of my price range).

Is there anyone out there who has one of these whips and can tell me about it? The site is http://www.handmadewhips.com

I think the price is okay but I don’t want to buy one and be disappointed.

I can't speak for the "Adventure Whip", but if your price range includes the Adventure whip, for $300, then you could easily get one of Gus Caciedo's whips, and for less than the Adventure whip. I have an 8ft. 8 plait whip from Gus and it's great. I know that doesn't help you out about the whip in question, but I just figure I'd let you know about Gus' whips, which are great for those of us on a budget.

I have handled over 15 of skips side by side with a Morgan,
and honestly they are probably tougher and more accurate
in terms of "rough and tough" use.

He makes a really really solid whip.
Worth every single penny. Its a serious work whip, and is
a beautiful piece of art.

I honestly had no idea he had redone his website,
when you posted that I sort of freaked out.
(I love his work.)
He's a great guy to deal with, and to speak to.
We've met up a couple times over the years and
he's easily been the number one influence in my whip making.
His whips are more fluid and solid than any I've ever had the chance
to handle (and I've tried all the main cowhide makers)

Honestly, knowing how Victor makes his whips, that
"adventure whip" should easily destroy all comparable "budget" whips.

Skip is using some of the toughest leather you can make whips out of, so you won't be dissapointed with one of his whips.

Skip's attention to detail and his construction method as well as the leather he uses are top of the line.

This whip is not a cheap whip-like object; it's a PROPERLY made whip, and as such is a sound investment.

Go forth with not a care with Skip, you will get a GREAT whip that will last you for a very long time.

He's a very nice man and if you have any questions he is a pure joy to talk to. Basically, I'd say go for it.

As an afterthought to Bogart, while I am not discrediting Gus's work at all here, it might be bad form to speak of another whipmaker when one is being discussed for an imminent purchase... Unless of course you KNOW that he makes a sub-standard whip that is. Just not sure it was necessary.

This Adventure whip by Mr SanSoucie looks fantastic. Redhide latigo makes a great leather for a whip. Most of the tough work whips used in Australia that I've seen are made from this. I hope he eventually gets around to offering a 10 footer.

I don't normally buy whips by other whipmakers but in the case of Skip he is a real specialist in Latigo and a true craftsman so I made an exception....If you want quality then this is the way to go

Skip is a great whipmaker, no doubt. And as all the folks wrote here before, his whips are a class of it's own.
But here we are on the adventurewhip, right? Okay, here we go. It's an 8 plait whip, made out of a light tanned
latigo hide. The good news... All eight strands run down the whole whip. Not a single strand is dropped.
That makes it very exact and straight in it's motion.

I agree with Mola Ram. This whip is by far more than a beginner's whip. It's also for the advanced.
Why I'm so sure about that? I own one. And I use it hard. That's why. Here's some pic.








It maybe not that sa as some would it like to be. But therefor it's not called "One more Indy whip",
it's called "The Adventure Whip". The wrist loop is very strong. I have that bad habbit to slip my
hand through the wrist loops of my whips. When I give lessons, it often happens that I just open my
hand to point something out etc. And the whip falls with it's full weight into that wrist loop. More than
one wrist loop didn't survive that. And I'm not talking about hundreds of times doing that. I mean doing
this for ten or twelve times... The adventurewhip had this now for twenty or thirty times. No prob at all.

Okay, there are things, more important than a wrist loop. Back to the whip itself. It's very well balanced
and it runs through right to the point. The latigo fall is far away from good and bad. It's nearly indestructible.
And who hadn't the situation: Crack! Part of the fall together with the crackers gone.

Next point. The material. Everywhere you can read "Roohide whip". But some whipmakers just make the
overlays from roohide. The bolsters are cowhide. Okay - a bolster is there to give some weight, to beef
it up. No problem with that. But if cowhide is used in roo whips - because it doesn't affect the performance
of the whole thing... Why not have a whip which is completely braided out of cowhide? Made from latigo.

Enough for now, I think. Wichita Jones, if you're considering to buy a good whip (not a cheap whip -
big difference!), then take that one. You won't be disappointed.

No bad form intended Franco. I just saw some one who was looking for a whip and was on a budget, and I just figured I would let him know about Gus' whips in case, being new, he didn't know about them. But not trying to bash the adventure whip or show bad form at all. Sorry for any offense.

Well Padawan, you can't get much better recommendations about Skip's whips than this. Both experienced whip handlers and whip makers recommend them.
