I noticed Wested are now offering a ROLA version of their wonderful washed goat OTR Raiders jacket - ie no inside facings etc.
Here's mine that arrived yesterday - with a coating of building site dirt

And today, after a shower and scrunch

Lookin great.

I ordered a custom Raiders in washed goat before christmas. Still waiting cause of the supply troubles with washed goat at the moment. But I'm really likeng the look of this hide.

When you did the shower thing, was it in warm water? How long was the dry time?

Whiskyman, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.
We've been discussing the flying squirrel effect; how is this one zipped up?
Do the armholes seem higher on this ROLA?
Overall, that looks like a fantastic jacket.

Here's how it looks zipped up.

Best thing was, as it's off the rack, it only took 4 days from ordering for it to arrive. :)

As for the shower - I always use very cold water.

My first was a 40 - this time I went with a 42 which I think is a better fit for me.

Nick, the jacket looks great. I checked out the website and it isn't clear about the lining of the jacket. Does this version still have the cotton/satin lining as the others do?

Also, Peter mentions this jacket is lighter than the others. How do you feel about the weight of this jacket compared to the others you've owned? Do you think you could wear it with a thick sweater or shirt during the colder times of the year? :-k

Posted: Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:42 pm
by whiskyman
Hey Harry, it's got the cotton/satin lining. Similar weight to a lambskin jacket, but tougher. If you check my first pic you'll see I've got a fairly hefty pullover on under it -very cold over here at the moment!!

What is the back length, sleeve length and the stormflap length? Also, pit to pit?

Nice! My LC washed goat is one my favorites! Quality is alright despite these OTR jackets being made in India. SA it's not, but I love this hide!

Quality of the India jackets may be just as good or actually better, in some cases, than the UK made ones. Just throwing that out there as an owner of an OTR.

that looks really nice Nick.

I am not a fan of the washed goat that much.it is not raiders skin SA.it is too dull. the raiders IMO had a blend of dull parts and shiny parts on the jacket.

but I love the cut.

it is the special offer rola in washed goat right?

Sweet! :whip:

And the price is really good on this too. As soon as I save up some cash I think I'm going to order one... :)

what's washed goat mean?

Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:53 am
by Pitfall Harry
It means the goat got a bath before they skinned it.

All kidding aside I think it means that the skin has a dull and worn in look.....kind of like it's already distressed. At least that's my understanding, I could be wrong. :-k

That's a good question. I've tried to look it up to find anything specific about it. Washing the hide is part of the Tanning process anyway, so that isn't it alone.

Harry may be right in what he says about it just referring to the appearance of the tanned hide. That or the hides are actually washed again after tanning.

I just caught this above... "Quality is alright despite these OTR jackets being made in India"

I wasn't aware that the "Off the Rack" Wested jackets were being outsourced to India, is that true? :-k Not that it matters to me, I was just curious...

Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:34 pm
by Raider S
Wested's website doesn't specify India, but that has been stated by COW members.

Of course we should all be aware it's not a good thing to form the equation India = Shoddy Workmanship.

I believe Peter himself stated that th OTR jackets were made in India in a factory run by a former employee of his who returned to India to set up his factory.

I don't want to derail this thread into a discussion on outsourcing to other countries but I don't agree that just because something is made in say India that it automatically means poor workmanship......I take everything I own on a case by case basis..... I've gotten stuff made here in the states that's total junk and a few things from overseas, including India , that were well constructed and have lasted a long time.

Anyway....back to the topic at hand, Nick's jacket. ;-)

the guy who makes the jackets in India, worked at wested before.he moved back to India, but Peter still wanted him do the of the rack jackets.

To take this thread off topic again, I know that lamb is the weakest leather. Is goat the strongest? I've been seeing so mayn goat jackets lately that I don't know. I always thought horsehide or cow was the strongest leather.

Nice jacket Whiskeyman. It looks great. I personally like the washed look.

goat and horse are pretty much the same when it comes to strength.goat maby be slightly stronger since it is almost water proof and more dense

the goat and horse were used in the millitary back in the 30-40's,and stil are

If I may one more slightly off topic question but I think it is open and shut and doesn't really require a whole thread.

Within each hide would/should the thickness be more or less consistent in terms of jackets or are there significantly different iterations of thickness available for each hide. For example could I ask for a thinner/thicker goat from Wested and would they/could they oblige?

Posted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 6:48 pm
by Pitfall Harry
I would *think* that depended on the types of skin Wested had available at the time. :-k

they must have tweaked their ROLA jackets. the cut and style of your jacket really reminds me of the jacket in this picture.even the length.but it may just be the picture or the way he stands.

WOW. That is spot on for the cut and measurements. I am thinking about getting a special offer lambskin. While I was looking at the various offerings I noticed how many differences there are in the pocket flaps, for instance look at the soft goat...compare to the lambskin and compare to this washed goat.

If I would order a lambskin now do you think it would have the same or very close cut as whiskyman's does?

yes you would, they are made by the same company,by one set of pattern, the only thing that differs is the hide.

That is very close. Good job by Wested.

Holt, what scenes are they filming in that picture?

That was what I thought but I was under the impression that the temple jacket featured the longer collar, ala Holt's Wested. :-k

And I think that is Slocombe, Indy G. Good eye.

Well the only reason I'm asking this is because it appears the cut has changed substantially from the picture of the OTR lambskin posted on the Wested site. It looks like they have made improvements and I was just wondering if anyone has recently bought a lambskin to prove or disprove that the pattern is better these days or, if they still have old stock that they haven't sold through yet.

There seems to be a heck of a lot better sculpting on the pocket flaps

Oksay, the vital statistics:

OTR - size 42
Armpit to armpit - 22.5"
Sleeve - 25.5"
Stormflap (not including collar stand) 23.5"
Back (not including collar stand) 26.5"

I am SO incredible lost by wested sizeings and lengths for the of the rack jackets.

I mean last time someone had a 42 special offer it had the back length of 26'' ,today its 26.5'' and I bet the sleeves are longer too...

In feb/08 I got a special offer 44 with the back length was 26.5'' ,today its 27'' I think,.....or longer

why do they keep changing their sizings and length??

it frustrates me cause I never can know about what I am going to get when ordering a of the rack.

they should make a sizeing page on their website and make STANDARD lengths and sizes so people know what they get when ordering an OTR jacket. why they dont have that today beats me.....

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 8:36 pm
by Tibor
I agree with Holt. Wested needs to standardize, and I think completely redo their web-page. They make great stuff like the jacket on this thread, but you never know if that's what you'll get or if you ordered the wrong thing, or if it will look half as nice on you. Which have an FS effect?, which are narrower?, ROLA vs Raiders...

I don't know why there is a separate site for Indy jackets where you get the Raiders jacket, LC/CS jackets, and junior sizes, but an Indiana Jones section of the main web-page where you get the Raiders 80's cut and Temple of Doom, but only if you know to open the custom section.

What he needs is one section:
Indiana Jones jackets
1. Raiders authentic original cut (no facings, etc.)
2. Raiders - updated, fuller cut
3. Temple of Doom
4. Last Crusade/Crystal Skull
5. Cloth
6. Junior sizes
7. Customs
And for each, list available standard hides and standard measurements. Examples of the hides could be listed separately. Custom can be as wild as Peter is willing to make it - sizes, hides, shearling, whatever.

Alrighty then, enough of that from me. I'm hoping Peter is already working on something like this. Great jacket Whiskyman.

That's what I don't understand with this OTR standard... I love the improvements and I appreciate the changes because they are for the better, however I wish we were told when and what... Of course Peter might have a few issuse with selling certain batches...

I am going to take the plunge tomorrow. I have wanted a Wested since I have joined this community so long ago and it's due.

I will get the Lambskin and go from there. If the cut is not the same as this washed goat I will be saving up for the next Wested, because that is what this hobby has become for me: trial, trail, and error, then trail etc.

the jacket is SHORT, it may look longer by the way he stands or moves, but come on it is short, short and short
