Finally I have a Young Indy fedora! It is a Christy´s Adventurer with a 3 inch brim and a 2 inch ribbon in Cork. Many thanks again to Erri for helping me to chose that colour, it is wonderful.
The hardest part was to find a 2 inch ribbon in the right colour.
After some time I found one but in the end I had to redye it because it had a little bit too much red in it. To my eyes it turned out quite well..

I bashed it after the "Springbreak Adventure" episode, I guess with some more wear it will naturally morph into the more well worn look of "Mystery of the Blues" or Petrograd, 1917.

I´m really happy with this hat as the YIJC hat was always one of my favourites and this one here seems to nail that look pretty good.

I think it looks great and you really nailed the Young Indiana Jones look. I'm surpirsed at how much Hornets is willing to work with its customers on different specs like brim width and ribbons. Most factories won't and that is great to see. Congrats on the hat. It looks great. Post some photos of it on you noggin.

Hornets Hats have great customer service, very friendly and helpful. They have plenty of different ribbons to chose from, but sadly at the time of my order they didn´t have a dark brown 2" ribbon so I had to find one myself.

Soon I´ll post some photos of it on my head.

that looks great can't wait to see pics on your noggin. the bow looks very nice....why can't they do that for all of the adventurer's (standard offering)?

that looks like a winston block. is it completely stovepipe?

Unbashed the hat is untapered like my sable Adventurer but with less backtaper. Overall I think this is very very close to the block used for the hat in the series or maybe it is even the same block.
The bow wasn´t made by Hornets, it was made by me and my dad. Actually it was our first try and I´m really happy with the result.

It is my understanding that hat ribbon does not normally come in 2''. It is very difficult to find that size in any color. When I was talking with Oak earlier this week, he told me his ribbon jumped from 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/8 inches. At any rate, the ribbon looks great and I think Hornets did a very good job on the hat.

Yep, it´s very difficult to find a ribbon in that size, I found mine in an old clothing shop. It seems to be quite old.. it has a wonderful feel compared to my other ribbons.
Now I wish I had bought some more meters.

Very nice and well done, need to see it on you. I love the show and the worn look of his hat, you need to have some adventures in that hat. Very nice and enjoy.

I hate to disagree with you G. You didn't see my first bow. It looked like a blind monkey stitched it on but it still was a bit better than the modern Hj/Christy

I like that YIJC hat. In fact, I'd like to see how does it looks in your head, but its a greay job, and looks good for sure!

From what I understand from browsing around here, they make great Young Indy hats. -M

The Miller 257 is a very nice hat, to me it is the best close enough YIJC hat you can buy, without having to modify it.
I have one since 8 years or so, it was my first real Indy hat and I wore it in the YIJC style.
However, I always thought it was missing something to get that look right. Now that I´ve got that hat with the 2" ribbon and the 3" brim I think I´ve gotten a lot closer to achieving that look.
I guess by now you can see I´m quite "obsessed" with the YIJC fedora like most people around here are with the Raiders fedora ;-)

The model adventurer is made on a stovepipe block, if I got what you mean, always has been. Does anyone still believes that Christy's block is in any way tapered?

I believe that this is one of the most screen accurate YIJ hat ever (related to that particular episode of course). Darn it, it looks so nice that now I want one LOL
Once the brim will soften, the hat will be definitely BANG ON

Errie, when you say tappered block. Do you mean no tapper at all or just the sides of the block. The christy's I have seen had tapper built into the front and back. They also had tappered on the bow side like theIr HJ brother.

The brim was the hardest part to get right. I spent a lot of time working it into this shape. Now it is really soft and just "falls" into that look

I don't know. I see slight tapper in this hat. Don't get me wrong. I like that it gets a really nice YIJ look to it.

That slight taper is coming from my head deforming it a bit, I guess I need a new hair cut. This happens with all my hats at this moment, especially the Christy´s which are narrower than my Fed IV or Miller. I´m gonna post some new pictures as soon as I got my hair cut, then it should be "better".
But actually I think that slight taper (maybe even more) is needed for the YIJC fedora, here are some pictures:

It kind of looks Dr. Whoish!! I haven't seen those old Dr. who episodes in forever and I can't even remember which Dr. Who was which. But from my fragmentous (is that a word) memory, that fedora looks like the fedora of the Dr. Who which sported aforementioned fedora.

Thanks Aviator, I just talked with Mr Justin Davies about the 3 inch brim and he said it is no problem. Only the 2 inch ribbon I had to find myself, because they had no available.

I pulls the look of spot on imo and would be a nice hat to own, the young indy fedora looks fantastic in some episodes...cheers Tremelo I’m going to have to look into it.

Maybe I could get a ribbon from a vendor here as a vintage dark brown or "Nigerian" (as i've heard it called) brown ribbon in 2" would be hard to come across.


Hollowpond, the fellow who played that doctor was Tom Baker and it was Herbert Johnson that supplied the fedoras. I have a vintage HJ that is a dead ringer for it only in Black. I once considered harvesting it for an Indy lid but I came to my senses . I don't believe Tom Bakers hat was a Poet, others in the Dr.Who world think so but I have studied it and believe it was commissioned especially, though it has symilarities to the Poet block shape.





This Young Indy style which Swales was commissioned by Lucasfilm to do is actually an extremely familiar style to what HJ had been making for years.

Hey Tremelo- what color was the Christy's ribbon it came with? Was it dark brown or black? Did you happen to take any pics of it as it came?

The hat came with the standard dark brown 1 1/2" ribbon. Before I ordered the hat I spent a lot of time finding a brown 2" ribbon and the only one I could find looked like that one here:



A medium quite reddish brown.
As you can imagine that colour wasn´t really what I was looking for, so I thought "why not try it" and dyed it to a darker brown. I´m really happy with the result.

Are you thinking of adding some light "distress"? Sand maybe? I don't know? It's time to see more pictures of that beauty. Has the brim got softer yet?

Tremolo, I am REALLY not a big fan of this fedora at ALL, so it takes a lot for me to say it, but you did a really good job with that one. Looks pretty authentic.
