Forgive me if there is already a thread on this, but I haven't seen on in a while. What is the consensus on the best way to treat hats of different materials. I'm specifically interested on what, if anything, should be applied to a new Fed IV, but this might be a good place to write about the differences in treatments and philosophies on hat treatment (water repellent, etc.)

a fed iv has got some wild hare mixed with the normal rabbit fur which gives it that extra oomph of resilience as well as finish.

i've had my fed iv in one of the worst rain storms here this year and she passed with flying colours. it didn't get to the point where it was soaking through the felt and liner, but the water was dripping off the brim something fierce.......thought the hat was toast. the next day, it didn't even look like anything happened to it.

if you really want to protect it, scout has some decent weather protectant product. personally, i'm waiting for penman's weather protectant as oak prefers it over scout's.
