Got my Brown Raiders Explorador! Fits perfectly!! Got a 60 and I am usualy between a 7 1/2 and 7 3/8

That's a GREAT site! I love how they have a list of all hats with a review of each one with the pros and cons!

I've had my Explorador 1936 for some months now and I've been wearing it most every day. Took it with me to Disney World last month and while there was caught in a tropical downpour! It dried quickly and retained it's shape. I should also let you know that I don't treat this hat with kid gloves. This hat gets treated rough! I'm pleased to announce this hat can take it!

Sure. Place the staple above the ribbon band and insure it is well anchored into your skull. ;-)

Specially considering it was one of the very first hats we made (I think is #9 or #10), and that the previous owner also abused of it.
That hat has been under the rain in Paris and under the hot sun of Bolivia, and now resides in the US. Who knows where will you take it...

Are these hats reblocks then, or just Alphareds? The brim looks massive from the picutres on the site, but from what i can gather its 70mmx66mm?

The brims are 7mm wide, and we cut the sides using scissors, usually 6.6 unless any different required...

I guess you mean 70mm and 66mm, otherwise you have redefined the concept of stingy fedora's ;-)

i took a quick look at the website just to see where you can get HJ's these days. the replix hat looks really good.......but do you actually get that when you order it? too bad that all of them except for the IMHJ have a really, extremely, nasty, ugly, cruddy, terrible, horrible, disgusting, pukey bow work on them.....and i'm being nice too

quick question though, why does the AB review state that their ribbon is a petersham?

oh man......my stitch nazi mentallity is starting to infest itself in my hat making mentallity.......i think dr. hatch will have to prescribe me more meds!!!

Man, I'm really intrigued by this hat! Can anyone compare it to other similarly priced hats, i.e. Fed IV, Christy's, JPD rabbit, etc.? Color, bow, felt, finish, floppiness, sweatband, liner, etc.?

G, I don't know what it is these days but the term grosgrain and petersham get mixed together and they shouldn't

There aren't many here, so there won't be much opinions...
We have been making hats for the people at the Spanish Forum who wanted something already bashed, tough, and as cheap as possible, so our hat isn't better than any other you can get from all the hatmakers at this forum, I guess.
I think our is better that the Christies (felt and shape), but that's just my opinion.

The lining is ivory, with the golden compass logo for the browns ("Explorador"), or the DC-3 for the greys ("Viajero"), and the sweatband is made of black leather. We use petersham ribbons.

The felt is much softer than a Regular Fed, thicker than my IV but thinner than the III's I own, just right for a dress hat. Did I mention it is soft?

The Crown height is taller than the Fed III (wow!) But not quite as tall as my Penman CS Train hat.

The Bow material and shape is very well done, the color looks right to me.
Feels very well sanded, or pounced, much more so than my Fed IV the III's come close but not quite.

It is stiff, but not Fed Stiff, but not so floppy that it won't hold shape. The open crown one I got was easy to dry bash.

The brim is nowhere near as stiff as a Fed. "Firm," I'd call it

The Liner does not have a plastic sweat cap, I'm in Georgia, don't need one.

The logo on the liner is a compass rose in gold and has Explorador written on it. Cream color, not white. The Liner stays in place and does not droop and tickle the top of my head. Glued like a Fed.

The Sweat band is larger than on a Fed and soft.

The Explorador says US 7 1/2, but any other 7 1/2 I have ever had I needed tape, this one is perfect. It is a 60 cm but is rather more like my 59 cm Fed III's.

I have Standard Feds, not the Dlx. And I know nothing about the others.

Like the Fed's, the Dimensional cut was done so well, that it is a perfect oval, no flaws whatsoever.

Explorador is softer to the touch and fuller feeling. "Rich" for lack of a more technical term, describes the felt.
