I've decided to get an MKVII bag. I looked around this forum a bit first but couldn't form an opinion based on that alone so I'm looking for some direct input from you guys. Which of these bags would stand up to the most wear and tear? Right now I'm thinking no the original unissued bags as I really don't want something that has writing all over it and is a good 60 years old. The price difference between Todd and Magnoli is negligible. They both look great, so it's down to durability.

I'm a big Magnoli fan. He does excellent work, has very high standards and I've never been disappointed with anything I've gotten from him.

I just got my Todd's bag yesterday, so I'll give a report after some use. Thus far it's really nice, more olive green than I imagined though.

I have a Todd's bag and was sold on the price. After using it, not necessarily on a regular basis, the stitching came apart on the bottom of the bag. It was an easy fix with some fishing line, but was surprised to see that happen since I didnt really use it. Other than that, I have been very satisified with the Todd's bag.

InyMag's bag is spot on and well made. BUT...you will have to add a bit of green to it for S.A.
I personally gave up on repros and bought a real one.

Ditto. Especially when you can get a real one for a reasonable ammount.

Have you considered a What Price Glory bag? Or are these the bag that Todd is selling?

I own neither. I found an original. Sorry that has nothing to do with the question asked but if you can then track down an original

I have a Todd's and a Noel Howard unissued. I basically use my Todd's the most to haul around baby gear, toys , snax, etc., and I am very satisfied with its performance and durability. I would blow a gasket if a juice box were to start leaking in my NH, so I keep that one for when I'm just lugging my own stuff.

I have the TODDs bag and I am very pleased with it. I replaced the strap with a CS acurate one, and it holds up very well. It even managed to hold my weight when I put the strap around a pole to see if a bag could hold a persons weight like in LC it worked too.... but I have had no problems with the stitching or anything else, I use it all the time.

How is the durability of the Todd's after several months?

I have never seen or handled the one made by Todd's, so I cannot say anything about its durability. But I got one from Magnoli right before my 4-week dig in Israel, and it held up great! I wore it out to the dig site every single day, as well as on all my weekend travels, and it had no problem with all that abuse. I highly recommend Magnoli's satchel. Yes, it is a Magnoli strap of the medium brown with grooves type with the flat, square slider. No, I did not experience any problems with dye bleeding--and believe me, pickaxing, shoveling, lifting stones, etc., 8 hours a day for 4 weeks, all on the edge of the desert, certainly had me sweating plenty. But I never had a problem with any dye bleeding through or off. What was a slight issue was that sweat caused some salt stains on the strap, but a damp paper towel wiped this off just fine.

I've been using Todd's bag as my everyday man-purse/satchel for many months now and it's held up great. No stitching has come undone, no wear on the strap loops, nothin. Durable enough for me.

I have a Magnoli strap and when I first used it, I had problems w/ dye bleeding onto my clothing (due to sweat - I bike to and from work). Soaked it in a bucket of water and fixed the problem. It's fine now, I use it everyday. Sorry, back to the topic at hand...

I'd echo the post above. WPG still has originals on hand.

I've never seen a Magnoli bag in person but I do have a a Todd's. I'd say it's a very good reproduction, sturdy and durable.
You'd probably be fine with either bag.
Dry rot is the problem with many originals, even unissued ones. They seem to be plentiful though.

For the trap, I am strongly in Todd's camp. I have three of his, all from different batches. Each is different, but they are durable and they don't bleed with sweat or rain!

As for the bags, I know Todd used to sell the WPG repros, but I think they are different now. No experience with them. I have seen a Magnoli in person and I can tell you this - I want one. Just as soon as I can justify buying another bag.

I just got a Magnoli and it's a lovely thing in terms of construction- I would echo the fact that it's rather too sand coloured with not enough green.

While I have no experience with a Todds, I highly recommend Magnoli's bag. It has held togther through many harrowing situations. It's colors not exact, but its not that big a deal to me.

I have a TODD's and I'm very happy with it. I think the color is spot on, and the construction is strong, durable and accurate. Here's the pics (less than 6)

The first was inside with flash, the rest outside with natural light (although color wise with flash looks more true to my eye).








I don't have a Magnoli, and only know of them by reputation, which seems to be good apart from color.

Todd's current bag is his own. It's a very well made replica of an original with functional bottom vents even.

His current strap is solid leather as well, not bonded.

My Todd`s is still going strong 9 months later. It has seen sun, sand and general travel. Highly reccomended!

I just got a bag from Todd, and was extremely pleased with the look and feel of it. Seemed a very sturdy bag. However, while applying what I thought to be relatively moderate sanding to the surface of the bag, I managed to sand through the seam stitching in three different places. While this is totally my fault and can be fixed, the seam thread that Todd uses does not look nearly as substantial as what is on my original MK VI. I am confident that I would probably never have had a problem with the bag had I not done this, so I am not bashing Todd or his work. Just realize that one may need to take this into consideration when distressing the bag. I am still pleased overall. A great bag for the money.

My Magnoli with a Wade Egan strap as supplied via Magnoli. Very very nice!

I bought the Todd's about a 1 1/2 years ago. I take it canoeing, camping and hiking very frequently and it is as durable a bag as you could want. The green has faded a tad but to be honest until the release of dvd I thought the bag was tan anyway. So I like the color it has faded into. Highly recommended. The strap is great also.
