Do you think there will be a Federation V?

Or at least one in the next couple of years?
What kinds of things would they probably do to make it different?

They don't need to - the Fed IV is a fantastic Indy hat - great block shape, great felt, great price. But if they wanted to, they could try to lighten the color a bit. That's the only quibble I have with mine - it's too dark to be a perfect screen accurate Indy hat.

I agree. The color needs to change.

Less front and back taper. I wish they'd go with a thinner "Ultrafine" felt, like the Squatter used to have. I'd like a color closer to a Miller.

Short of a sudden consumer rejection of the Fed IV (which probably would have happened by now), I doubt they will change it for many years. As stated above, the color needs some work, but even if they change it, the model will probably remain the same.

Slightly thinner felt might be good. Overall, it's a versatile hat that you can get most film styles out of.

I thought the previous Federation was a fantastic Indy hat. I got mine five years ago and now they come out with a Fed IV. I think another half decade or so, or another Indy movie, and there will be another re-invention of it. My $0.02.

I've never seen a Fed IV, except in pictures, but do they all have front and back taper? Some of the pictures I've seen show some taper, but some don't show any. Is it just luck of the draw as to what you get in regards to taper?

The front/back taper of the Fed has improved since the last incarnation but yeah it's still slghtly there. In most cases, putting in the centre dent would eliminate it altogether. As I said in another thread, the Fed IV block shape is quite versatile. You're mostly only limited by your bashing skills.

The Deluxe is thinner and smoother felt, but I concur that it could be a tad lighter in colour. That said, in the harsh Aussie sun, it photographs lighter.

If that happens, I hope Indy is going after the Fountain of Youth!

If they make V, it should have a taller crown so it can pass as a raiders hat. The current IV is a good hat for the other movies, but less so for raiders. They should probably always keep making some version of IV.

I was going to suggest, in addition to the lighter color, a slightly taller crown height like on the Fed III. And the same type of bow as was on the Fed III. It's more Raiders IMO.

Won't the sun fade the Akubra a little?

My question is "why would you want a Federation V?" The IVs just came out. Theyre brand-spanking new. You can't be that unhappy with it, can you? I think Holt's Federation is a IV and look at what he did with it.

The sun will fade any hat over time. The sun's just like that. ;-)
