The Terry Leonard/Tony Nowak Story... and Famous Quote Story

Here is a story about how Terry Leonard and Tony Nowak met that you guys might find interesting...

In Tony Nowak's quest to offer his customers the best possible products that he could, he actually utilized his "Hollywood" connections in order to attempt to contact Vic Armstrong and Terry Leonard as he discovered that they were involved as stuntment in the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie.

Eventually Tony Nowak introduced himself to Terry Leonard on a phone call and let Terry know that he was offered the opportunity to craft the Crystal Skull jackets for Indy IV. He then invited Terry Leonard to visit his shop so that he could personally make a Crystal Skull jacket for Terry Leonard as a gift.

Terry accepted and came to visit Tony on November 11th, 2008. It was on this day that Terry got fitted for his Indy IV jacket. He also spent some time taking photos with Tony and talking about his experiences on the set and making the movie. Terry also signed a copy of Tony's "The Complete Making of Indiana Jones" book with a personal note. I will attach the pictures at the end of this post. Terry then parted ways with Tony. Tony offered to ship the Crystal Skull jacket to Terry when it was completed, but Terry insisted on coming by to pick it up in person.

When Terry's jacket was completed, he visited Tony again for the second time. It was at this time that Tony asked him if he still had his Raiders jacket. Terry Leonard said no, that he had given it up to someone on the production. Tony then brought out his own personal Raider's jacket that he wore to Queen Mary and asked Terry what his opinion was.

According to Terry, it was spot on, the leather, the look, the weight, the fit, the feel, and the 'quirks' that he had with his jacket like how it hung off of his shoulders. He also commented that his particular jacket was slightly lighter in shade than Tony's personal Shrunken Lamb jacket was. This is what prompted Tony to offer Terry a new Raider's Jacket in a lighter shade of Lambskin that fit the color that matched Terry's recollection.

Afterwards, Terry took some photos with Tony in his new Crystal Skull jacket and then he presented Tony with some pictures that he autographed and they spent some time conversating about all things Indy before they parted ways.

Now onto the interesting story of the famous Raiders of the Lost Ark Quote: "It ain't the years honey, It's the mileage..."

According to Terry Leonard, he and Harrison were drinking at a pub one day during filming of the Raiders of the Lost Ark in England. While they were drinking and talking, Terry said to Harrison, "It ain't the age, It's the mileage..."

Apparently Harrison really liked the line, and then used it during filming changing it slightly to the famous quote that we all know.... "It ain't the years honey, It's the mileage..."

I thought that was an interesting anecdote and figured that you guys might get a kick out of it too...

I always thought Ford may have just ad-libbed that line. Interesting to know the origin of how it really happened!

that's a great story. i know tony told me that a while back but i thought indiana williams told us that story about the line in the other thread?

tony also told me how TL was a very gracious man but the years of that kind of work has taken a toll on his body.....kinda like an old rodeo cowboy who's got the aches and scars to prove it. from what tony told me, terry leonard said "this is it" when he slid TN's jacket on....then commented on the fact that his was a lighter shade.

from what i understand though, tony tried going through the 'hollywood' route to get to terry leonard and he was told that "no, YOU can't see terry leonard", so he just looked him up and called him himself.......not his agent/manager/or what have you. tony was his humble self and terry leonard went to see him at his shop, eventhough tony offered to meet him at a venue of his choosing.

Wow.. you guys get really nitpicky with wording here. I apologize as I am actually at home sick with the flu as I have been typing this stuff out. I will try to be more accurate. What was meant in my statement was that Tony "attempted" to contact them through his Hollywood connections... Sorry if that statement was misconstrued.

No, no, no... not at all Indiana G. No need to apologize! You guys are the 'gear heads' here. Tony and I are still learning about this wonderful passion you all share. Please keep me on my toes so that I can stay as accurate as possible for you all here!

Honestly, the INDY bug has hit us both as well. We even have hats from Steve Delk. ;)

Just an aside, but is that a TOD style vent at the bottom/side of Terry's jacket in Holt's pic?

Is that the Cow hide jacket? I thought one of the Cow hide jackets was used in that scene, or it's just the photo, or one of the 'differences' in a Order #2 jacket

I must have missed the earlier mention of the vent. Sorry Holt, I didn't mean to give you nightmares. Now, don't look under your bed tonight - the vent might just be lurking there ...

Asiana Jones, perhaps when mr. leonard comes in to pick up his indy 1.....could you or tony ask him if he knew what kind of hide his jacket was made of for the stunts.....its speculated that it was cowhide.....and perhaps ask him if he recalls where it came from exactly......and any details he could recall which we could sink our teeth into and dived COW into warring factions (like bink and holt)

Ya that would be great, as long as you don't bother him too much

Asiana Jones,

I'm sure I'm not the only member who would be interested in seeing a photo comparison showing the colour difference between the shrunken lamb that Tony is using for Terry's jacket and the darker shrunken lamb that he's used on the majority of jackets to date.
If you're able to take some photos outdoors in natural daylight, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Chris

Not to boast, but I have worked with Terry Leonard on a couple of western movies, and he's the coolest guy with the greatest stories. Terry is quite the horseman among other things. At the time of these movies I feared to let my inner Indy geek out while on the set. However at the time he did tell fascinating stories of the making of "Apocalypse Now" It's great to hear he's still fond of the Indy stuff.
