Some use ethyl rubbing alcohol and some isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

Generally speaking, yes it does. Start off slowly on an inside piece until you get an idea of the effect. Its really not that drastic though....not like acetone!

acetone no way

acetone is almost like bleach in the way it can remove dye from some leather. The only way I have found to safely use it is to apply a very small amount to a cloth rag and when it evaporates to almost dry, rub the leather carefully. Always test a small, preferably hidden area before trying anything in the solvent family on a leather garment though.

Man, I've never tried applying alcohol to my jacket and the thought of it scares me. :P

Wouldn't denatured alcohol be ideal?
