Post by blueoakleyz »

Don't know of any other leather jacket forums, although it'd be nice to know where there are some

but I'm not sure I want to get a jacket at US Wings anymore. I just mean a leather jacket not just an indy one.. Are there any other good online stores for leather jackets?

We've been through this with you before, haven't we? Or am I mistaken? I personally have found your questions odd to say the least.

As I said last time - please try other, more relevant forums to your needs. This is the IJ site so our focus is obvious. Google is a wonderful thing.

I don't know where you live or what kind of physical condition you're in but why not shop around for vintage? Plenty of good stuff there. On sites and in person if you visit thrift shops.

The Sportsman's Guide always has leather jackets for reasonable prices. I'm not sure of the quality, although they look fine. Do a google search for them.

Quit being a forum hog. You can just ignore my threads.
But for cryin out loud here I am, in this thread, ASKING for other forums about leather jackets.

Google is NOT a wonderful thing. It gives so many ambiguous and useless results it's a pain in the ###! It's easier to ask people.

Blue, you are starting a lot of threads and asking some questions that are almost the same and some that are a bit off for an Indy site. People are trying to be helpful but can't make the decision for you. You just got about 10 different places to look. There's no need to get angry.

Not to be rude or inflammatory, but I think Raider S is right. We have pretty much given you every crumb of leather jacket knowledge we have over the last couple of months, including non-Indy jacket topics. Time to look it all over and make a choice, or move on to something else. Which is to say, if you can't decide by now, you will never be able to.

1. Pick a style.
2. Set a price cap.
3. Pick a leather (you know what each is good for by now).
4. Pick a vendor (we have recommended all of the good ones).
5. Take the plunge.

If buying on line is too blind of a thing for you, limit yourself to buying in person.

You are ready, Grasshopper.

You can also try styleforum.net. But those guys SPEND.

Personally I hate keeping up with the latest whatever. I just go with what I like wearing as a foundation then add a piece or two of whatever is popular at the given season. Saves time, money and headaches.

Best way to find out what fashionable is to let your gf choose what you wear. But the caveat there is you might not like what you are wearing.

I think what Raider S is trying to say is that without knowing you and what your style is and your price range, it's a little difficult to give good solid advice about such a wide topic. At least with Indy stuff, we all figure that you must like Indy gear or else you wouldn't be here. I'm new here too, and I was waiting for my Fed IV about the same time as you on the thread you started. We were both obviously looking for a lower priced but good quality SA Indy fedora, so it was easier with that information for other COW members here to give us specific advice to lead us to the Fed IV. Just asking where's a good place to buy a leather jacket is like saying where's a good place to buy shoes. What's good for me might not be good enough for you. What I would like might be abhorent to you.

Having said all that, you may also want to consider the fact that "fashion" is always changing and so what might be in style now may not be so in, say, 3 or 4 years. Flight jackets like you were initially considering such as the A-2 tend to weather the fashion trends and transcend eras, so if you're planning to drop a nice sized wad of moola, you may want to spend your hard-earned money on something that you can wear for more than a season.

Actually, if you don't mind second-hand stuff and aren't that concerned about the latest styles, the thrift store suggestion is pretty good if you live somewhere near a nice, big city (unlike me). Also, you may want to take a peek in the Cairo Bazaar here. Every so often a nice non-Indy leather jacket will come up at a reasonable price since they're second-hand from another COW member. The only thing is that you have to be patient and wait for something your size.

Good luck with your search!

beautiful jackets, but the price is pretty decent imo. orvis.com has some very comperable stuff to what is on TTA but their price is KABOOOOM!!! alot more on average than their last year's catalog.

i think folks expect all leather jackets should be in the wested range, but if you do look around......a decent moderately priced leather jacket is about as much as a super duper custom wested.

a well made bomber jacket would be around $500 to $600. i even think the expo is a great deal considering their top shelf construction. us-wings from what i hear have excellent bang for the buck knowing their construction as well.

the high end stuff is the limited edition belstaffs and some other wierd brands that try to make names for themselves by charging over $1200 for a jacket. if i'm in that price range, there's only two people to call for an excellent jacket that will last forever......mags and mr. nowak.

I'm getting an A-2. I'd like to get something in lambskin that's more fashionable as well.
Nothing more than a couple hundred for each though so that's why I'm looking around.

Extra threads don't hurt anyone so let me ask til my heart is content otherwise my brain will explode. I can't spend another hour searching these forums after the last, well pretty much 48..

[quote="blueoakleyz"]I'm getting an A-2. [quote]

You said you weren't going to look at Wings, but I HIGHLY recommend you at least take a peek at their limited edition vintage goatskin A-2. I have one, and it's the nicest one I've EVER owned. EXTREMELY light weight vintage 1940's era goatskin, and probably the only honest to gosh 4 season leather jacket I have in my closet now, with the addition of a sweater in cold weather (which I've now personally tested and works).

It's definitely a departure from the norm. The ONLY thing I DON'T care for is no inside pocket....but I can have one added later by a local tailor.

Anyway, check it out! It's the first one listed.

Just to clarify, Wilson's Leather has not sold jackets in a while. That has been a task left to the Wilson's Outlet stores. It is my understanding that most of the Wilson's stores are to be closed soon as well. The ones in our area were pretty much selling other labels like Pelle, Guess, Kenneth Cole, etc. Check the online store - since they are closing, you may find some excellent deals there.

There are some great buys on ebay as well.

So many are into the "Google" search. How about doing a Google search to find jacket manufacturers and outlets in your area and visit them? There is no better way to judge the fit than to try one on in person. I have gone to Howard's Leather in Spofford, NH, Vanson Leather in Fall River MA, US Made Leathers in Danvers, MA, Walter Dyer in Framingham, MA, etc., etc., etc... You learn something from the experts there every time you go.

Sorry Texan Scott, point taken. I stand corrected. :)

I am passionate about my jackets. It is difficult to judge the quality of a leather jacket from a website photo, although it is a start to judge appearance.

Since we are clarifying... blueoakleyz, does a "good" site mean one with great jackets, great prices, great pictures or the most hits? I can show you a hundred cool jackets (not including the Thriller jacket), but cool is in the eye of the beholder. You stated you wanted an A-2 and then another jacket in lambskin. Any particular style(s)?

I would seriously take a look at the A-2 Michaelson is pointing out. I've been drawn to that one a time or two myself. I just can't purchase another jacket without incurring some wrath.

A part of me wishes that they would stop making those A-2s and save all that beautiful vintage leather for the upcoming Wings ToD.

I suppose with any of these types of questions, I needed to say something to the effect of: what kind/style of leather jacket are you looking for? One of those 'personal preference' questions. If you get a good fit from OTR sizes, online ordering can be a good experience. If not, jackets made to even sizes, ie 42, 44, etc. are a good way to go. As has been pointed out in the past, leather is great for breaking the wind, then it depends on how much lining you like, as to warmth. Style is also a consideration. Last year, we were on a trip in November, and had to detour to a Ross, Dress For Less in order to get some warm clothes for the Grand Canyon tour the next day. The $23 cotton A-2 likeness, with faux wool lining is the warmest jacket I have, and also a good knock around article for errands, work, etc. Something that you do not have to worry about "losing", if the opportunity presented itself. ;-)

I have so many conflicting desires right now my head is spinning
solution will probably be buying multiple jackets over time
I think as far as an A-2 goes I"ll give US Wings a go and if it doesn't work out return it.
