where'd the name come from?

Someone tried to explain it to me once. It is a jacket made for a select few COW members. There are cetain specs to it that have evolved from the secret jacket society. This select group of gearheads are off counting stitch threads, snaps, zippers, hide color and thickness. To most of us these jackets would blend in and disappear, but if you are wearing a Members Only jacket, it is only recognized by the group. I hope to find out more about these jackets so I can own one. People on the inside have been known to do anything to keep these powerful secrets from getting in to the wrong hands.

I had an original Members Only jacket back in the 80's. I'd like to forget about it as if I never wore or owned one.

Not only that, members only jackets were created with a special, Native America spell written into the left arm lining. This spell serves to make all those jacket owners especially lucky at casinos. A few MO jacekt owners have become reclusive millionaires. There are those who don't believe in the power of these jackets. :o

"One jacket to bind them all..."

The true origin of the M.O. jacket has been shrouded in secrecy since its inception, and guarded by the Knights Templar, the Free Masons, and now worn exclusively by the illuminati.

There is a legend that the original Members Only jacket was taken from the Roswell site by one of the civilian experts brought into the investigation. That person vanished under mysterious circumstances but the jacket had already passed to a new wearer. This particular jacket has proved highly elusive and may have been part of the inspiration for the "Dead Man's Gun" concept.

Recently declassified documents, although still heavily censored, contain hints that the "headcovering" of one of the aliens was smuggled out of the storage facility in the late 70's by a Corporal Wilbur P. Dorfman. Further investigation by "top men" in the field came to the conclusion that "Corporal Dorfman" was a false identity created for the express purpose of infiltrating and investigating the facilities at Area 51 by staff of the National Enquirer.

...and to sort out a serious answer from this lot...it was a 'popular' jacket made back in the lat 70's through the 1980's that featured shoulder padding and a 'membersonly' name tag on the front.
You were considered to be 'cool' if you owned one. There were so many knockoffs it was silly.

I heard that the lining of the MO jackets was made from the Shroud of Turin, giving the owner of the jacket the ability to sweat profusely and still smell good, allowing the jacket to be worn in deserts and jungles with seemingly little ill effect. Also, the storm flap had buttons!...but they were hidden buttons, so you don't see them so it looks better but its more functional to have them so the jacket is perfect that way.

Quick lesson in 'moderating' then....at least ONE solid reply need be made in a thread giving a requested definition so the original poster does not come back later and angerily post 'I asked a serious question, and you're all just making fun of me.....' :x

We've had folks go ballistic when threads go this route, and it was all just meant in fun.

This way, question asked, answer given, carry on....no problem to diffuse later, and no tangled thread to unsnarl. :)

Here endeth today's lesson in moderating 101. ;-)

You see, sometimes there IS a method to the madness around here. :M:

Ah, the memories...

... The memories of being the first AV Jock to have a fedora AND Members Only jacket.

To be the first AV Jock to wear spandex pants with my fedora and Members Only jacket. With Combat Boots.

I was the future. And I was the past.

In that case Michaelson, I applaud you for trying to make it look like at least one of us is sane, although we all know that we're all a bunch of loonies.

My favorite members only jacket is the gray one. I was part sophistication, and part party animal, all rolled up into one beautiful polyester package!

I still have my old black Members Only jacket! I pull it out whenever someone has an '80's party, much to my husband's embarrassment. Yep, I'm a pack-rat. BUT, I was never a mall rat.

Heck, he gave the only real response...

By the way I got a shot of Santa wearing on old MO jacket. He was waltzing around the compound in the North Pole accompanied by one of his elves. The unidentified elf was brandishing a small caliber pistol apparently used to keep eight tiny reindeer in line. :[

I actually had two members only jackets. I had a gray members only jacket that was the typical cotton windbreaker version. They looked just like the leather one that was pictured in the link that Michaelson provided. I don't really know where that jacket is, or if I still have it.

I also have a down jacket that I have had for quite sometime. I still use it for working out in the yard on really cold days, so that I don't mess up any of my better jackets. I didn't even realize that this was made by Members Only until recently, when I noticed the label inside the jacket. It did make me take a second look. It is a little different design from the typical Members Only jacket, but once I realized it, I did see some similarites.

This topic makes me wonder if we will think of today's version of the Member's Only jacket in the same way in several years. I think today's version of the Member's Only jacket, is The North Face Denali jacket.

This is a fleece jacket that is made from Polartec 300 fleece. Jackets made of Polartec 300 fleece from other companies usually run $30-$50. The Denali is very popular amoung several groups of today's youth from kids in the ghetto to trendy college nerds. The Denali clocks in at $165. So, you pay $50 max for the jacket and at least $115 for the little The North Face logo on the front of the jacket.

What will we think of this jacket in ten more years? Will people wearing them today, look back and laugh at themselves for wearing it? Or, will it still be popular at an even higher price?

I heard that Tony Nowak got hold of an original Members Only jacket is going to be offering 555 replicas for the low low price of $6,000 each.

You just made me depressed, because I remember, which apparently makes me an older guy

My grandfather had bought me one when I was a kid and I wore it, but never thought it was anything special. They became very popular again with the kids today and 80's retro kitsch/fashion.

I just went to the site and the nylon jackets are $78, which seems about right for a jacket these days.

I remember having a few Members Only jackets in my youth. Not only the infamous cafe racer jacket that most associate the brand with but some thicker jackets as well.

I think some time in the late 80's Members Only tried to branch out to the more conservative styled jackets and trenchcoats similar to London Fog.

I guess it did not pan out for them.

I wonder if my Dad still has his hanging in the closet somewhere. :-k How much are all original "O.G" Members Only going for on Ebay these days?

Yesss! Dirk Benedict. I thought he was so cute in Battlestar Galactica. I saw some V costumes up for auction a month or so ago somewhere. Hmm. Anyway, my brother and I could only afford the knock-off Members Only lookalike jackets until the waning days of the style when I finally got my black jacket. My brother WAS able to get some parachute pants for Christmas one year, though, in the height of their popularity. And apparently my husband used to be a good breakdancer although I have never seen evidence of that.

BTW, they're baack!
